8600 GS issue

So recently my brother's 8600GS started having issues and im wondering if this is a PSU issue. I have yet to test it but that will happen soon . Basically during game play the game will lock up and then close, the screen will then default to 800x600 resolution, and the lowest color setting. at which point the only thing that can be done is restarting the computer. Any ideas or similar situations? If you need more info I can provide that as soon as I look at it this evening.

Not sure about it being a PSU issue, could be heat related on the card, or a driver issue.

Test different games and establish if a particular game makes it happen, or whether it seems load related. i.e. no issue whatsoever when on the desktop.

I'd also open the case up and just see how much dust is in there, may even be neccessary to take the cover off the 8600 cooler and check inside the heatsink for dust build up.

Well the card is clean, within the last month it was removed but im not ruling out a heat issue....I am going to have him get a monitoring program dl'd tonight to watch the temps. It only has problems when running games ie. WoW portal half life 2 etc. No issues on the desktop so you may be right it could be a heat issue

EDIT: I have attempted upgrading the drivers and also going back to an older set but the problem still exists on both

From recent Inquirer news, all 84 and 86 core cards have problems that will kill them sooner or later. The 8600 is one of them AFAIK.

hmmmm interesting.......well we got it working again. Turns out I opened his case and then got attacked by the dust monster that lived inside. Everything in his machine I tested in my own and it all is working (now that the 8 pounds of dust has been evacuated). The only fatality was his motherboard but it was cheap to begin with so no great loss there

I believe the issue is with the mobile versions only. Still, Nvidia hasn't officialy admited it, so, who knows.
