Hey guys, i sent my computer to customer service a month ago cuz my 8800 GTS 640 MB died. Thing is they no longer have that card in stock so they just replaced it with a 9800 GX2 LOL. OK, great news, i know, but they're not changin my PSU so i have to buy a new one. I've been doin some searching and I've been told that the Thermaltake Toughpower AW0105 700W can easily work with that card, which im not sure of thats why im asking if thats a good choice or not.

Comp specs:
Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 2.4 GHz
4x 1Gb DDR2 667mhz Kingston
ASUS P5B Deluxe
Sound Blaster X-Fi Xtreme Fatality

Oh and i have two HDD, 250gb and 80gb SATA II each.

btw it's kinda weird having such a graphic card with those specs lol, specially if I only have a 19" LCD monitor which supports up to 1280x1024.. lol as long as it's better than the old 8800GTS... can't complain.

I think that any 600W PSU would do for your rig. But I do hope that Grace our PSU expert girl says her few cents.

Saying how many watts he needs isn't a good idea. He really needs to know how many Amps he needs on the rails.

I'd say that's way more important than watts, and could give him the right idea as to what he needs.

I would recommend the CorsairTX at 750W. It can handle upp to 900W without any problems and it's very energy efficient.

For silent powersupplys I have experienced the Antec Neopower to be more silent, though. The last one which I had died after 3 years and my warranty couldn't cover it because it went off by like 2-3 weeks. Bad luck.

Bjorn3D has a good review on the CorsairTX and I would recommend it if you're interested to read about it.

Believe it or not, the power requirements are over-rated for the 9800GX2. According to the specs the card "requires" a minimum 580w PSU (some boxes say 575, some say 600w), but I know for a fact that it will run on a brand new 500w PSU with the specs bohem listed. The thing is that I'd go with the recommended or higher to have the extra wattage available for future upgrades.

As for the required amps, the 9800GX2 was rated to require 40A total from the +12v rails from what I remember. The card requires 1 x 8 pin, and 1 x 6 pin PCIE power connector (some manufacturers will include a 2 x 6 pin to 1 x 8 pin adapter in the box).

BTW, it is a monster card, so you also need the space inside the case to hold it (it's 10.5 inches long, and 1.5 to 2 inches thick). Thankfully the power connectors are on the top of the card, so you won't have to worry about them getting in the way.

Installing a powersupply with high wattage is also good for keeping down the noise, although if a powersupply which have too high wattage than necessary I believe it's a waste of money and also think that it actually get's more expensive on the electricity bill.

As from what I have seen here on DriverHeaven, I can see that the power efficiency becomes bad to some powersupplys if the power drain of the power supply is very low.

On many places on the net people have been saying that the CorsairTX at 750W is a great choice, but I'm wondering if it is as quiet as the ones from Antec nowadays.. Hmm..?

They just told me they don't have those PSUs (CorsairTX or Antec) cuz they only work with Thermaltake. I just ordered that Thermaltake AW0105 700W PSU and I'm supposed to pick it up tomorrow.

No I mean that this PC Store only works with Thermaltake, not the Graphic Card.. but thats strange as well. anyway, this is Spain.. u know.. lol
