New Nvidia Fanboy

Well guys all my life ive had ATI cards and now ive switched to nvidia just for the hell of it to try it out, so I got myself the famous 8800 GT, I got a few questions and things about it, first off it seems to not be performing that well for me on the newest games like crysis the fps isnt that great at about 1280x1080 or however that res goes on most newer games i think i might have a bottleneck somewhere in my system not sure which my CPU is old but it is a dual core and running at 3.3mhz not sure how bad that would make it, worst part of my system i think is my ram which is ddr1 and I think it might be at 200mhz thats what cpu-z says but I thought i was told its 400mhz when i was buying the system, anyway my power supply is a corsair 450VX which is 450W the card requires 400 minumum so is 450w a sure bet or did i get one too low? I know corsair is supposed to be a good power supply, anyways if u guys see anything wrong here let me know was also wondering if u guys get the temperature of ur 8800 displayed in rivia tuner or ntune on the newest drivers, I dont.

yea.... you may want to upgrade everything else, the memory today is capable of delivering over 2x the performance of you system right now.....

the PSU is good though

to take full advantage of your system i highly suggest getting a new motherboard, CPU and memory

If you have NTune instlled then open NVidia Control Panel and click on the performance tab to see the GPU temp.

Like Kris said, your 8800GT performance will be significantly hampered by your other main components. I haven't a clue what sort of budget you may have if any to make any further upgrades. If you have limited budget then you could consider the Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3L (No RAID and supports upto 2xIDE drives max), E2180 (high performing dual core budget cpu) and any 2x1GB Kit PC2-6400 DDR2 800 from Geil, GSKill, Corsair or any other reputable brand-name. If the mobo only having two IDE channels was problem you could pick up DVD Combo SATA drive and put your remaining drives on IDE.

These upgrades listed above would give your system a real lift when using Windows, Office apps, gaming and elsewhere that you would notice immediately. There would be a substantial rise in fps too.

Yea thanks im gonna be slowly thinkin about upgrading, gonna probably get my new mobo+ram first see how that works, then start thinking about the cpu, wats the advantage of all these newer cpu's that so much over the old ones I had my 805D run at 3.33 from 2.66 and I thought that bring it up to par with some of the newer ones, if I was to buy a core2duo which one is the best bang for the buck im looking for one with good overclocking potential, also that gigabyte motherboard u mentioned I see they have one in stock in my local computer store looks pretty good ill probably go with it, I was also wondering about when picking ram wats the difference when it says Dual Channel its the way to go right?

lets just say that the Core 2 Duos power levels have surpassed the Pentium D's obtainable power levels so far that it simply cant touch it. youre already looking at over 2x performance with the Conroes.....

Kentsfield Quads are much higher

and dont get me started with the Wolfdale and Yorkfield based chips that beat your chip even in sheer GHz

TaZer, I wasn't saying that you should buy that Gigabyte mobo, I was just giving you example of some high quality products that are budget models. You need to identify your budget and exactly what specification you need before jumping in man. It could be that you want to have SATA RAID option or you want the max FSB to be 1600MHz so that you have more upgrading paths in the future. Choose carefully dude and research fully.

You'll probably pick up your components far cheaper via an on-line etailer than your local store and more than likely they will be newer revisions too.

You'll need to buy your memory at the same time as your PC3200 is not compatable. It doesn't support your current CPU either unfortunately as the Pentium D 805 runs at 533MHz. The DS3L only supports CPUs at 800MHz or above. Check this list of supported processors from Gigabytes website. You'll probably need about $200-250 CAD to do the full upgrade.

The Intel Dual Core E2140 is $75 CAD
The Mushkin (2x1GB KIT) EM2-6400 DDR2-800 is $50 CAD

Sorry to be the harbinger of doom...

i think he may be able to OC the FSB or something....

i dont think that the CPU support has been pulled completely...

but it probably isnt fully functional.

I'm not sure...haven't really got a clue to be honest...it maybe best to email Gigabyte to ask them unless anyone here knows for sure.

I cant really tell the difference they look the same just one is clocked a bit lower, so im not sure which yet but would these cpus hit 4ghz no problem? I have pretty ok heatsink and fan.

Different architecture, a Core 2 at 1.6 GHz would be approximately equal in performance to your Pentium D running at 3.3 GHz.

I'm not real up to date on Core 2 overclocking, but I feel the need to reply with my standard plug, that no overclock is guaranteed. For guaranteed stability, only stock clocks will do.

Where are you located by the way? Depending on where you are, I (or someone else on here) may be able to look for better prices locally.

I just double-checked the list and it does indeed say that it is not supported. In the last column of the 805 entry it has 'NA' which means not supported (the key for the chart is at the top).

Anyhow, since you have the bread available and looking for a nice cpu then the Wolfdale Penryn is the way to go imo. The E8200 is available from NCIX for $205 CAD but not from Canada computers although Canada Comp will probably have it in shortly. You would need to update the BIOS on the DS3L to F8a to support the Wolfdale though and may need to borrow a cpu from a friend in order to do this if 805 does not work.

Damn that cpu looks nice and such a good price too, I want to get that one but what you said about upgrading the bios on that mobo I dont know how I would do that I dont have any friends I can borrow a cpu from what other way would there be to do it?
