8800GTX Urgent Help

My problem is that i bought a BFG 8800GTX the other week, set it all up and turned my comp on, i get no connection from the monitor to the card, and also the pc itself isnt booting up so i cant use the keyboard or anything its just powered on idle, also i cant open my disk drives they seem to be powered off. Is this due to me not connecting my new PSU in correctly?. I RMAed the card but it was sent back saying it isnt broken, can sumone give me advice on what to do, since everytime i turn my comp on now it acts irraticaly, like it will turn on for a split second then power down, or not turn on at all, also there is a slight buzzing noize comming from my psu when on.

The last time i used teh computer was a month ago, i had a 2 x1600xts in corsssfire installed a 500w PSU and everything was fine, since removing them i havent touched it until i installed the new 8800gtx card and 650w PSU ,BFG stated my system should be fine to run this card even thou h my mobo is ati based. Nightmare situation since im using my mums pc which sucks! any advice would be appreciated.

My specs
Corsair 620w Modular PSU
Asus A8r MVP Mobo
AMD 64 x2 4600
1 gig Ram x2 512
Fatal1ty Sound Card
2 optical drives
1 250 gb hdd
17" LCD

Absolutely nothing you posted above leads me to believe it has anything to do with the graphics card, no idea what brought you to that conclusion. It certainly sounds like a PSU issue. It's either a faulty PSU or you have it connected up wrong. Whats the motherboard power configuration? Is it a 24 pin, 20+4 pin and do you have those inserted? Does it have a seperate power feed to the processor, normally a 4 pin socket next to the CPU. Could you have dislodged something ie RAM etc while installing the new components?

If I was you i'd take the whole lot out of the case, lay it on an insulated sheet and run through the installation part by part til you narrow down the faulty component. Even the best of us use instructions sometimes. Be nice if you could try a separate PSU too.

Give it all a try and let us know how it goes, if you need anymore help just shout.

Thanks for the quick reply. I know for sure that theres a 4 pin connector i attatched to a slot by my CPU on the mobo, however the PSU has another 8 pin connector that i cant find a socket for. Sadly im propper newb when it comes to installin PSU's so i most likley connected stuff up wrong and i dont know the specs on my mobo (A8R MVP) well. So i think ill send it to a friend to see if theres a problem. You dont think i burned out my psu by constantly turning my comp on and off to test if the card was connected to the monitor?. Its brand new.

Double check all connections. The power cable to the power supply to the outlet. Also make sure if you are using a surge protector it is on. On the back of the PSU you will have an on off switch (sometimes) make sure that is turned ON.

good luck

No they'll take a fair bit of hammering and a good quality one like your corsair has plenty of protection built in. Are you sure your PSU is not 620W?

Ok anyway look here http://images.anandtech.com/reviews/...mvp/a8r-mb.jpg

On the bottom you have a white block with 24 holes, this is for the 24/ 20+4 plug, every hole should be filled.
On the right hand side of the board near the top you have a 4 pin socket, that is where the cpu plug goes.
Move to the middle of the board and you have a 4 pin molex plug, the kind you use for hard-drives/dvd-drives etc. This is a supplementary power point for your graphics card, your better off having a plug in that too.

Go give it a try and let me know how you get on.

I'd suggest poping the 500 watt psu in again and seeing if it boots up... it could be a dead psu...

That cards a beast and i wouldn't build a rig without 700 watts of power in it to push the sucker

620W is more than adequate for that card, maybe not for SLi but certainly enough for one card. The GTX only idles 10W above the GTS and 30-40w under load. I'd be extremely suprised if the setup in that rig runs more than 500W even under load.

i'm considering upgrade ability..

while i don't expect the system to require all that much juice under load... i typically like to keep a system roughly 25% UNDER the rated PSU wattage, for example if a system is drawing 500 watts at full peak load, i'd probably want no less then a 600 watt or 650 watt psu in it.

PSU deterorate over time, a 600 watt psu probably won't drop all that much, but say 3-5 years down the road, the 600 watt limits is now barely able to sustain a 575watt load. I'm well within the margins of saftely keeping a machine more then adequately powered up.

when it comes to PSU's, it's always worth it to get more then you need.

I'm running one of these on the specs to the left w/ no issues. Two things.

1. Make sure you have both power connections run to the card.

2. Make sure you have balanced out the load on the PSU. Which just means think of each component as a glass. You have only so much water to fill up each glass but you need to make them equal.

In my EVGA 8800GTX package came 2 molex to PCI Express power connetors. Do you have those to use with your other PSU?

For the 500w PSU i dont have enough molex connextors to use them. I have 2 pcie connectors on my 620w modular supply. Do you suggest i use the connectors i got with the graphics card and attatch them to 4 molex connectors on my 620 w psu?

Shouldnt need to really as long as you have 2 PCI-e connectors on the PSU. Try your old PSU to just power up the mobo, cpu and ram. If it stays powered up it's the corsair PSU.

Exactly, you don't need to plug in your Hardrive/CD ROM, or anything really else aside from the motherboard, the graphics card and that's about it.

The less you have plugged in, the easier it is to figure out what is causeing the problem.

Just use the bare minimums. If you have to don't even use a CD ROm, just Hard Drive, CPu/20 pin (24 if available), and your gfx card. Just connect your essentials to get a boot to see if it works.

best of luck

reseting the cmos MAY doing something, but i highly doubt it.

Apparently your still having issues, have you tried the other PSU to see what happens?

drivercleaner here on the forums will take care of that mess. A leftover ati driver may cause the issue.

er... it doesn't matter what is on the system.. if you can't get anything to show period.. something is wrong...

I mean if you have ati drivers installed, usually you may get a BSOD and a computer reboot and post again....
