Nvidia FX5200

Well it's a really good card with latest games from what I hear, and I can get it for cheap ($50-60) which is right in my price range and I need a PCI card. So any suggestions? Is there anything better that won't blow my range or should I just stick with this one?

fx5200 isn't supported in windows vista... so keep that in mind (then again, i don't think there are ANY PCI video cards supported in vista atm. )

The FX5200 isn't a "bad" card, but it's not all that great, personally i'd go the radeon 9200 series which should cost roughly the same price. Yet again, the 9200 series also has no support in vista and driver support in xp has been basically discountinued.

I've a radeon 9550 in a machine here, and it's AGP, supported in vista, BUT it barely can crunch through an older game UT2004 at any reasonable pace. Course i could be just picky, anything under 30fps kinda sucks imo.

The FX5200 is like 4 generations old and it really just sucks.
No PCI video card is very good, but the best one out on the market right now is probably the ATi Radeon X1550 PCI model. There's a whole gigantic thread about PCI video cards here: Nvidia Geforce 6200 128mb PCI (not express!!)
Anyways, if you must get a PCI video card, then get a X1300 or X1550.
The FX5200 sucks hardcore.

dont bother trying carbon, because of its shaders, at low settings, you wont be able to see the road you're driving on.

for oblivion, i ran it on a x1400 and still lags even at lowest settings(without patch) and getting around 40fps after installing the patch and running it in SM2.0 mode.

not sure about quake 4, but doom 3 still works ok on my fx5900xt, so i think the fx5200 has a chance on the lowest settings.

it is. you just have to use the windows default drivers. That's the only driver support for any FX series cards using vista.

as for the card itself, the card will get you limited choices as to what you can do w/it gaming wise. understand that some games will not be apble to play because it doesn't have the requirements of some of these newer games.
