i am a newbie here. does anyone know if the last revision of Omega drivers for the windows 98se platform exist anywhere for download that would have compatibility with geforce 6800 GT gpu? all the links i've tried don't work anymore. also does anyone know if this driver or of any other driver that will work with this gpu that will allow me to have access to the display resolution of 1680 x 1050 while running in 98se? are there any tweaks that i can try, modified files, ect.... any info would be great. thx.

First up, welcome to the forums!
Thankfully DriverHeaven is one of Omegas mirror sites, and as such you can grab Omegas releases on DriverHeavens download site HERE (promptly known as DriverHeavenDownloads.net). Unfortunatly, that was the good news. The bad news is that Omega no longer works on Win98/Me drivers, so that last update to those drivers go only as far as the Geforce 4 series. If you want 6800 support within Win98 you will have to settle with nVidias last Win98 driver, Forceware 81.98.

thank's for the gracious welcome! i already know about the 81.98 drivers but i don't think they will give me the option for 1680 x 1050 (XHD) resolution while running under windows 98. am i wrong in this thought? if i'm not, are there any inf file mods or tweaks that you know of that will let me do this?

i have no choice right now. i have some older design programs that would cost me over $10,000 to upgrade. the versions i have will not run in 2000 nor compatability mode in xp. any suggestions would help greatly.

If there is an nVidia control panel in Windows 98, then you can just go to "Screen Resolutions . . . " in it and add a custom resolution.

tried that it wont let me do it. says the resolution is invalid. i would bet it has something to do with the display inf files for 98 are written not to support this resolution since it's a fairly new one. there must be a way to do it though. i'm sure someone knows a trick or two.

another thing you have to remember, is that the monitor must support that resolution. But i take it that since you're asking, the monitor does in fact support that resolution.

Just to refresh, you followed the procedure as listed on THIS page, right? Also, you would need to have Acers monitor driver installed, or at least a driver that supports that resolution.
There was something about this that I recall having to do for it to work. It was something like needing to pick a resolution close to what you want, something that will work, adding it, and then changing something under the "Advanced Timings" button to 1. Once you do that you can add any customer resolution you want without hinderance. I just can't remember what the setting was in there to change.
I'll have to boot up my laptop to let you know what it was though (running ATI on everything but the lappies). BRB when I remember.

yes i followed the procedure. anything you can do would help greatly. one of the issues also is this monitor does not have a driver. Acer hasn't made one for it.

If that's the case then be sure to load the "Plug and Play" driver. If you leave it at the "Default" listing you will have issues. Which monitor is it exactly that you have, btw?
Unfortuately I have the latest drivers for my laptop, and I know that nVidia removed that advanced section after a certain version (I think they moved it into the new control panel, which I don't use). I'll have to install an older set first, so I'll be back in a bit with the results.

it's an Acer AL2223WD. bare with me here but i'm a little confused. when you say make sure that i load the plug and play driver, which one would that be since the monitor didn't come with one. what would be it's name when i go to update the driver or should i go to device manager and remove all monitors, reboot, let 98 find the monitor then select a specific driver? thx

Yep, the Plug and Play driver that Microsoft provides. Usually you will have to change it to that driver, either manually after the fact, or as you just outlined.
Unfortunatly, for the life of me, I just can't remember the exact procedure to do at the moment. Honestly, I've only had to do this once, and that was quite some time ago. The funny thing was it had to do with an Acer monitor as well. The best I can do right now is to reference a couple sites that I have bookmarked (ones I referenced back when I was looking into this too). Those are THIS page, and THIS page.
I do remember 3 things from when I was looking.
One was a suggestion to use PowerStrip which would allow you to add a custom resolution.
Another was to add the resolution you wanted to the nvidia INF file (in Omegas case, NVAML.INF) under the sections that outline resoultions (in Nvidias there are 3, Omegas there are 5). After that it's just a matter of reinstalling the display driver again, and that resolution should appear. Again though, you will need at least the Plug and Play driver installed for it to work.
Last one was in relation to the Acer AL2216W monitor. One guy mentioned that within the advanced timings section of Nvidias drivers if you change Timing Standard to "CVT reduced blank" that he was able to access that resolution. However, this also means that you need to first be able to add the resolution, which you can't at the moment.
Very last thing. I do have 2 altered INF files you might want to try. One is for the last Omega drivers, the other for Nvidias last driver. All you do is unzip the inf file into the installation directory for the drivers, and then either manually update the driver through Device Manager. You can get the Omega one HERE, and the Nvidia one HERE. Whether they work or not, I can't remember, but I do remember that 1680x1050 was added to both files.

IT WORKED!!!!!!!!!!!!
i uninstalled the original drivers with Driver Cleaner Pro in safe mode rebooted then reinsatalled the Forceware 81.98 Drivers, rebooted again and then copied the modified INF file into the directory where the setup files for the 81.98 were extracted to (NVIDIA\WIN9X\81.98) then reinstalled the 81.98 driver using the setup.exe in that directory and "Voila", 1680 X1050 was now the highst resolution in the NVIDIA control panal. this is "major" info that many with an NVIDIA card (that can anolog at this res), running Win 98SE with a wide screen monitor could use. A+ tip!!! thanks again for the help "Tipstaff" your a godsend!!
