Could an 8800GTS overheat because of this?

The EVGA 8800GTS heatsink/fan comes with a thin plastic film covering it, could this in anyway cause the card to overheat or malfunction?

To make myself more clear, the plastic is like when you buy a new LCD and theres that thin plastic layer protecting the screen that you have to peel off, kind of the same thing here.

I have been getting alot of freezes with my 8800GTS and I doubt that this little plastic could have much to do with it but I don't know, since the time I removed it I've been playing 2 hours straight and no freezes yet, but the freezes are so random I can't really say yet if it was what was causing the problem or not.

It kind of would make sense that after extended periods of gaming, with how hot these giant cards get the plastic could create some kind of overheating problem, if not melt, but it was such a thin layer of it that I dont know if it could create a problem to such a large extent.

It depends if the plastic is covering any ventilation areas with gaps. I would contact eVGA and find out what its exactly used for.

If you haven't downloaded and install NTUNE yet I suggest you give it a shot and monitor your temps. My 8800GTX IDLES around 60c - 62c and LOADS at 75c - 80c. I contacted XFX over this and they said those are normal temps for the 8800 series which is 15c - 20c more then my X1950XTX's. I am awaiting a release of a custom cooler from Arctic Cooling for 8800GTX since XFX allows 3rd party coolers, unlike AMD which voids the warranty.

Here's a link for the NTUNE download for Windows XP:

I've never seen mine over 75c so that had me puzzled as to why my games kept freezing.

The plastic wasn't covering any holes, I dont think it was overheating, but it did keep freezing often, so far I've gone 2.5 hours now without a freeze so I think the plastic had soemthing to do with it, but I have to test it longer to say for sure.

As for what it's used for, I think they just wrap up thier cards like that.

My EVGA 8800GTX seems to idle at around 54C and the highest that I've ever seen it during load is 66C, measured by nVidia SystemMonitor and Riva Tuner. My case cooling is average, with a 120mm exhaust fan in the rear of the case and a 120mm intake fan in the front. The CPU is a x6800 with an Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro, and it idles around 40C and hits 60C at load.

Does it sound correct that my 8800GTX is staying that cool? I keep hearing people with stories of 80-90C. My X1900XTX used to make it to 80C all the time.
