GeForce 7800 GS OC and fan speeds...

Sorry for the uninformed nature of this post, but I'm having a bit of trouble, and am uncertain how to address the issue.

I've been running on a BFG 7800 GSOC for a few good months now, waiting for the money I need to make the jump to a better system. I've not had a single problem in the time I've run the card, but lately, there have been some oddities with the fan speeds.

Usually the card runs at a lower fanspeed while the system is idle, or during low intensity browsing and activities of that sort. When I play a game, or engage a graphically intensive program, the fan automatically ramps itself up to a higher setting. Five to ten minutes after concluding the game/program, the fan will spin back down on its own.

Recently, the fanspeeds been rather unpredictable. After quitting games, it takes much, much longer to spin back down to a lower speed. It will spin up spontaneously, or when very light programs are opened. Hell, even opening the nVidia control pannel sets it to the higher speed!

I had been running on older drivers (8x.xx - I forgot which), and thought they might be due for an update. I uninstalled, driver-cleaned in safemode, and installed the latest 93.71 drivers to see if that would help. It doesn't seem to have.

My bigger question, though, is that the new drivers promise maual fan speed control in the overclocking menu... But I can't find an overclocking menu anywhere! In the standard AND advanced views of the nVidia control panel, I see nothing for overclocking or fan speed. In the classic nVidia control panel, there's also nothing.

Anyone have any advice on this? Thanks in advance!

System Specs

Could just be the weather.

Maybe the temperature is on the line between going fast and going slow. So when theres a temperature change in the room, it makes the card hotter, hence the fan speeding up.
