8800gtx/gts
hey guys, im about to get a c2d e6600, 2Gb of RAM (667mhz Kingston), asus p5b deluxe. Since im not planning to oc (cuz i dont wanna spend all that money on cooling devices and stuff, unless it can be oc not using them), should i go for the gts or the gtx? the thing is i have a 19" lcd (Sony SDM-HS95) which supports up to 1280x1024 resolution, so i dont think i will be able to use the gtx at its very best, so thats why i've been thinking about getting the gts, but ive been looking at some benchmarks and it looks like its way slower than the gtx... so what would u recommend?

Absolutely 100% the GTS when taking into account your other components. The GTX would last you longer however by the time the GTS is considered slow there will be much better alternatives to the GTX available.

GTS without a doubt
These things handle anything on stock settings but are overclocking monsters.
With relatively small core (550) and mem (850) increases I can easily push past 14,000 on 3dmark 05 and 8,500 on 3dmark 06 with tons more headroom. Even with the overclocks the temps on auto fan (about 1400rpm@50%) setting barely break 75C under full load and is totally inaudible.
Hope that helps
Edit: all on stock outta the box cooling which is top quality stuff.

i see.. so if i get the gts i can oc with no need of cooling devices? just fans? btw the difference between both cards is 150€, so i wouldn't care buying the gtx, would it really be so limitated by the rest of the components? cuz id like to play games at full graphics setup and i bet the gtx beats the gts even at 1280x1024. but again, id need more fans for the gtx.

Yep all stock fans.
I guess if cost isnt an issue then go with the GTX but bear in mind your going to need 2 PCI-E power cables per GTX so four for SLi plus your going to need a pretty large case to accomodate the extra length, on top of that you have the additional power draw so make sure your PSU is up to it.
To be honest though I think a single GTS is upto any game with the option to add SLi when the prices drop or games require it which is going to be quite some time away.

If you have the cash to spare - go for the GTX.
The faster the card, the more AA/AF
If you'd rather spend your €150 on booze, then go for the GTS
But tbh... at 1280x1024... the GTS is probably the best bet, the only game in which you ***may*** notice the difference will be Crysis.

At least a 500W PSU. lol, but make sure it's a top quality PSU.

Enermax noisetaker would match your system spec very nicely and has been powering our main review system for a number of months now without issue (including a Quad Core CPU/8800GTX SLI setup).

thanx for the help guys.
one last question, is there any difference between the XFX 8800gts and the ASUS 8800gts? cuz the ASUS is a little bit more expensive than the XFX.

shouldn't be any difference really aside from the cooler possibly (haven't actually looked at the two cards myself). The cards should be off the same refernce model. One reason why one card would be more expensive than the other would be likely be because of whatever software is bundled w/the card. Usually adding games and other software would be the determining point of the price.

$150 (USD) would put a small dent into 4Gb of DDR RAM right now, but yes, it would still help
