XP not recognizing Nvidia 5500

About a year ago I bought a 5500 for a side computer that holds my sister's games. Last week the Windows simply stopped recognizing the card. I patched it by editing some settings and fiddling with it until it worked, but anytime you shut the computer off now, you have to change those settings again for windows to read the card as what it is. Currently, it simply claims that it is a generic VGA compatable video card. When the computer boots, however, it reads the card just fine, it's just windows that refuses the read the card and drivers.

Is there an internal problem on this, or was the card just faulty? I'm at a loss. The problems started about a month after installing the newest drivers.

1.5 GHz Sempron Processor, 1G RAM, running XP Pro. Thing is, the card worked from for almost a year before it just stopped being recognized by the OS. The newest drivers won't install at all, and the old ones will install by accomplish nothing.
