Pissed BFG 6800GT OC 256 problems updating drivers...frustrated.

Heyas all!

I have had this problem for a few months but I really am getting irked as I see how my performance is just terrible compared to what it should be in games.

The problem is whenever I try to update to the newest video drivers, my resolution drops to 4 colors and 320x240, and cannot be changed in the settings at all. I try to uninstall the drivers and go back to my old ones, but it still has the same problem, so i end up doing a system restore...

Here is my system specs:

Video Card: BFG Nvidia 6800GT OC 256 AGP
Sound Card: Logitech USB headphones
RAM: 1gig (2x 512) Corsair ram (memtest'd for 24 hours and no problems)
Processor: P4 3.0ghz (not overclocked)
Motherboard: ASUS P4R800v Deluxe
Power Supply: 500w Antec SmartPower 2.0

Why I want to update my drivers:
Battlefield 2 runs choppily on the bare minimum settings, and Everquest 2 freaks out when too much happens on screen with the "balanced" settings.
Counterstrike Source runs allright most of the time at max settings, but hangs for no apparent reason mid-game sometimes.
I just want to get the most out of my card basically.

What I have tried:
1. Updating the newest drivers over the old ones (failed)
2. Uninstalling the old drivers before installing new ones (failed)
3. Same as 2, but in safe mode. (failed)
4. Virus/Spyware scans (came out completely clean)
5. Memtest (passed everything after 24 hours of running)
6. Hard drive tests (no bad sectors, nothing)
7. Updated mobo agp chipset (no improvement)
8. Updated mobob drivers (no improvement)

So i guess thats where I stand, and unless I missed something, I am stumped to the Nth degree.

And I have spoken to a few people but they just said "get a new mobo and video card" but that really is beyond my wallet at the moment...and will be for a while.

Suggestions? ideas? similar experiences??

Thank you very much.

Forceware

Hi, I have been having trouble updating my video drivers.
I have a crappy XFX 6800XTreme and the only drivers I can run without a BSD is the Forceware 84.21. I cannot update newer than that. This card is just a starter PCI and time to upgrade already. Not sure which one but Ati (AMD) may be the direction. I have mostly used Ati.

When you install new video drivers, you should always uninstall the old drivers first, use DriverCleaner Pro under Safe Mode to ensure all the old junk is gone, and then install the new drivers.

84.21 for life

I tried to uninstall using the add remove in safe mode then used Driver Cleaner Pro cleaning all nvidia files and also cleaned the Cab and then installed the Win 2000 Asus V666 system drivers the latest 91.31 from nvidia and I got the same BSD and once again for the tenth time removed all again in safe mode and again cleaned the Cab and back to the only running Video drivers. 84.21. They work fine. Good thing at least one set does.
I'm not going to be too worried about it as the card is going to be history soon.

Update: I was able to install 87.25,
I first installed over the working 84.21 and removed and installed alone and it worked.
i did loose some on my 3Dmark5 but that must be typical with newer drivers. I will run these for now.
