Artefacts appearing on my screen

hello,
i just recently built my first computer and it was all going fine until i got message DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_EQUAL_OR_LESS on a windows error screen and restarted. i then started playing half life 2 which runs fine, when suddenly artefacts appear on my screen and triangles come off of everything and my comp. crashed. Now i always have those color blurbs even in the POST. Does anybody know what happened? i ran memtest and my ram seems ok(no errors returned)
if anyone can help, greatly appreciated

I had the same problem when I got my 6800gt. The temps were high so i exchanged and the new one worked perfect.

Before you return it maybe you should try reseating the heatsink, check your temps first, It might void any refund\exchange policy though so be careful. Or try to lower the clock speeds if you overclock. Do you overclock any parts of your system?
