So what do you mean
Nvidia (or any Nvidia based) drivers have problems recognising your GPU but it runs ok in VGA mode??
I am not sure but there is a chance that you have damaged your card
maybe you or your friend
Just try it to your friends machine and see if the same thing happens...
If the same thing happens that means that it has been damaged and you probably need to RMA it
If not there must be somekind of driver conflict with your machine

If he wanted so much to see it he could come to your place and see it himself in to your machine
