6800GT - lock ups and 2d artifacts
Hi guys,
I have a serious problem with my 6800gt, check out the screenshot below:
I never overclocked it or anything, temperature seems ok (never gets past 70°C). Did anyone ever experience something like that? Funny thing is, it doesnt happen all the time, i had this prob 2 weeks ago then it suddenly vanished, until today. The card locks up, goes out of sync, etc. At the moment there arent any problems either.
Tried different resolutions and refreshrates too, installed 3 different drivers, nothing seems to help.
The fact that i can screenshot it is kinda strange too, could it be a memory prob or something?
Oh yeah, its a gigabyte card.
Thanks for your answers,
nex

Hmm, that's really strange. Are you sure it's not your monitor?
If it's your video card, then it could just be dying, but I'm not sure. The card is securely in the slot, power plugged in, etc, right?

seems like the same problem I have with my BFG 6800GT, although mine usually only happens while gaming (which gets the ram warmer). Take a peak at the actual card and see if it uses the 4 holes around the GPU or the 5 (or 6) that are closer to the RAM to hold on the cooler. The problem with the BFG is that it uses the 4 around the GPU, and with the card hanging cooler-down in the case, it will eventually lose the connection between the RAM and the cooler. If this is the case, all you can really do is replace the cooler (which voids your warranty). I've been trying to avoid this, since BFG has a lifetime warranty, but this is my third card since I got it a year ago, and it's doing the same dang thing as the other two have, I'm about to give up...
edit: also, the temp gauge will never rise, since it's monitoring the GPU and not the RAM. god bless poor design

If you are seeing artifacts in 2D it can be heat related, so the obvious things would be to check to make sure the fan is running, and try lowering the clock rate, however the artifcats in the screenshot looks to be due to either bad memory (or overheated), or a bad RAMDAC (this is more likely the culprit though).
Best advice I can give is to try underclocking the memory and GPU, and get some more ventilation around the card (ie. try leaving the case cover off). If that doesn't help, and it's still under warranty, call the card manufacturer up, and tell them what's happening. Most likey they'll RMA the card.
You can also try install a different set of display drivers, however I don't think this will fix things.

XFX 6800gt with similar problem
Ive got a very similar prob with my pc.
I have an Asus p4p800e-deluxe with an XFX 6800gt. Nothing is overclocked and i am getting intermitent probs with green dots (and other colours) on the desktop which dont vanish unpon refresh, and large glitches in 3d apps. This can sometimes happen very quickly after tuning the pc on, which discounts an overheating prob i think.
Sometimes when this happens, the monitors seems to try to refresh by clicking out then in again (like when you change the screen resolution)
My PSU is an Antec true power 350w, and the voltages on the 6800gt are always about 3.05v, 5.4 and 15v (according to asus probe).
Can anyone offer any advice on this? Could it be the monitor or the psu? i doubt its the 6800gt because there are periods of time it works perfectly.
Would like to get this sorted as its proving a real pain, especially as the card isnt that old.
Thanks in advance

The absolute BEST AGP card out there is the Gainward Bliss 7800GS AGP which is actually a 7800GT bridged over to AGP.

RMA the card. the card is going bad obviously, if it is doing that on desktop.
in the mean time, get yourself a 7800GS and you'll have a better card anyways. after you get your original card back, you can sell it off and then you'll have made some of the money you spent on the 7800 back
