Geforce4 TI 4200 problem

Hi all, I recently discovered a problem with my graphic card while trying to play Direct3D games. First all goes wel for about 5 minutes (sometimes more, sometimes less), but then suddenly my system freezes completely and I have to reset it manually. I tried putting in an other graphic card and everything worked fine so the problem lies there. When I try a game in OpenGL everything runs well and it doesn't crash. So I would think it's a software problem (unless it's possible for a card to function well in OpenGL but not in Direct3d due to a hardware failure).
I ran a Direct3D test in "dxdiag" and at first that resulted in 3 errors, so I tried re-installing the latest drivers. Did another test and all the errors were gone but the problem still remained.
Then I "uninstalled" directx with a program and installed dx 8.1 to see if that helps, which it didn't.
So I really don't know what else to do, and I definitely want to avoid buying a new graphic card.. I hope someone has an idea what it could be. Thanks in advance

what driver set are you using?

I'm using ForceWare 84.25 from this site.
Maybe I could try and install older drivers for the card, like the old detonators. But did detonator just chance its name to Forceware? I don't know which version of the detonator drivers would be "best" for me to try.

the detnos did change their name, but being a GF4 it isnt coded for anymore aside from "compatibility"

Look for a detonator 40 series driver....I'm thinking maybe a 44 or 48?

use omegas 5672 driver. i have tested quite a few different drivers & this is what worked best on my wifes g4 4400. just to make sure, try the nv 5672 for a few days then switch to the omegas.
i also rec using the 'perf' vers of the omegas as the g4 is getting a little long in the tooth.
also, dx 9 made no difference on my wifes machine. & make sure you use dc plat between driver installs.

i guess i tried allmost every driver for this card, the new forceware driver.. detonator in many different versions etc. nothing helps.
if you find a solution please contact me either via email or here in this thread. im getting desperate.. :]

uninstall, use dc plat, then install 5672 omega. if you have not done that already.
