Las Vegas (NV) - The DVD format war between Blue-ray and HD-DVD format supporters got the Video Software Dealers Association (VSDA) worried enough to weigh into the discussion: A document with guidelines for a new format says that retailers are unlikely to adopt two formats and details the need for strong copy-protection features.
It is unusual for the VSDA to participate in the discussion about the introduction of a new video media format. The fact that the organization felt the need to publish guidelines highlights a growing concern that retailers and consumers could face two different and incompatible video formats.
"The launch of a single high-definition DVD format is unquestionably preferable to a 'format war' that could cause consumer confusion and lead to a reluctance to embrace either format," said Bo Andersen, president of the VSDA. The concurrent distribution of more than one format "is likely unsustainable," he concluded. As a reaction to the ongoing battle between the Blue-ray and HD-DVD group, Andersen announced the "Baseline Criteria for High Definition DVD Format (From the Retail Perspective)" document that outlined the requirements for a video format in US retail.
