President signs Cybersecurity bill into law
LONDON -- U.S. President George W. Bush on Wednesday signed the Cyber Security Research and Development Act into law, providing US$880 million to fund a variety of IT-security based programs.
Passed by the U.S. House of Representatives on Nov. 12 by voice vote, the Act is designed to fund research and workforce training in computer security. The bill had received a unanimous Senate vote Oct. 16.
The Act will fund programs designed by the National Science Foundation and National Institute of Standards and Technology to create new cybersecurity research centers, offer grants and scholarships to students pursuing computer security studies, and encourage senior researchers to study the field. The $880 million would be spent over five years.
