The last 1633S update made my drive all screwy. Hopefully this update will fix the problems.

this is a link to the real latest firmware for sohw 1633s/sx drives that enhances dl burning from 2.4x to 4x and dvd-r from 8x to 12x. i dont have any dl disks to check 4x burning.if someone could test this that would be great.later

I am using the BS41 patched firmware on my 1633S and I am having no problems burning DVD's. Unfortunately I don't have any DL DVD's to test the 4x burning upgrade.

Eyes down for 1633 BS42 soon - BS41 is pulled from the Liteon US site, as they made one small mistake...
Having tweaked it to add 12x P-CAV for -R, and 4x for double layer (like the 1653), they forgot to enable any of the DL media codes for 4x (turning 4x on with Omnipatcher seems to work)
So BS42 might just fix that, or it might be the most up to date firmware of the moment.
The Sony DRU710A also gets the boost
http://sony.storagesupport.com/dvdrw/dru710adwn.htm
Official upgrade to 12x -R and 4x DL
This shows that the 1653S and 1633S capabilities ARE the same.
Certain media has gone up or down in quality in particular releases, though in the main, the quality has been moving in the right direction, though the "old line" of 8x -R and 2.4x DL (BS0G, H, K, R) is still more stable for some media than the new line.

Can you recommend a firmware for the Lite-On 1213S?
The latest official 1213S TS0D firmware can't recognize or burn Philips 2.4X DVD+R blank discs. These same discs burn fine in my Lite-On 811S.
Would the 1633S BS42 firmware work better than the BY01 (Sony) firmware?
Or, should we just wait for a better "official" updated 1213S firmware from Lite-On?
Thanks in advance.

On the CDfreaks forum, I don't think there's anyone who hasn't crossflashed their 1213S (with the aid of fixed firmware or unscrambled firmware and the Omnipatcher).
If you are crossflashing, you need to "fix" the firmware or else the drive will go into the "dead drive blink", though that is apparently recoverable with a fixed reflash.
There is an additional tool around, for EEPRROM backup and restore, which can also clear the media learn data which would be incorrect on a "major" crossflash - by most accounts, ONLY required on a 12-16 conversion, or if the drive suddenly perfoms badly on media it used to like (classic symptom af a "bad learn").
Sequnce of the EEPROM Tool:
1. Save a copy of the EEPROM - to restore if you backflash... actually, saving occasional copies is a good idea, as if the media learning gets messed up by a bad example, you can restore tha last good one.
2. Before or after the crossflash, clear learned media
BS0G and above has been praised, though there seems to be enthusiasm for BS41, Sony DRU710a BYX2, and Memorex BWSE was also one of the better ones.
I think they've forgotten about the 1213S - maybe an update based on the latest firmware development might arrive eventually, but there have been 2 or 3 OFFICAIL 1633S updates since the last 1213S one - they are nor paralleling them like they do with the 8x2S and x51S models (all of which share the same basic chipset)
What media code are those disks? - there's another utility which can replace a useless media code with one you need, and then Omnipatcher can swap it to a strategy which you know or expect to work well with it.
