ATI SMARTSHADER competition - win a 9800 XT !!

Thanks to ATI and the recent release of Catalyst 4.2 - Driverheaven.net and Beyond3D are giving users the chance to win a top of the line 9800 XT (one per site) by creating their own SMARTSHADER effects with the SMARTSHADER plug-in.

For full information on this amazing competition read here

Roger and Maurice the guys who made this program have joined Driverheaven forum, so hopefully time permitting they can answer any questions you might have. Discuss in this thread on our forum.

Go get creative ! ill be closing the competition around 10th March.

Only Windows, I'm afraid. The SMARTSHADER effect doesn't work in Linux, mostly because the buffer allocation and swap code is entirely different in Linux, and porting it over would've been a pretty big job.

I encourage you all to at least try. What do you have to lose for not trying? The opportunity to win a 9800 XT. That is what.

heres a hint to get you started .

Take one of the existing shaders, and just change a variable or two. (or ask Roger and Maurice how to change a variable in the shader)

you will be suprised how easy it is.

I may even enter this contest!!!!

An example of what CM is talking about would be to take the Black and White shader and make everything really bright by modifying the scale parameter.

PARAM scale = {0.5, 0.5, 0.5 , 1.0};

Or make the following changes to Ghost to make everything more ghosty:

PARAM curFrameFactor = {0.1, 0.1, 0.1, 0.0};
PARAM ghostFactor = {0.9, 0.9, 0.9, 0.0};

Just play around with things until you get a feel for it.

Yup, that's my plan. I'm gonna poke and tweak their demo shaders until I can either figure out what is going on or just accidently make something kewl.

Yeah, I've been waiting a while for this tool to try just that.

It may just be an exercise in mental masturbation, but it looks like a FUN exercise in mental masturbation at least!

I've noticed that some people seem either seem intimidated or just don't know where to start. Would people be interested in a little tutorial to get them started on the basics? I could talk you through writing some small sample programs and give some basic exercises to help you get your feet wet. The examples could be very simple things to start and get slowly more complicated as people grew familiar with it.

If a few people are interested in this I wouldn't mind doing it.

For most people, free. I'd post it on the message boards. But you wouldn't be allowed to read it, CM, unless you paid a special low, low fee. ;-)

....OK.. wait.... so this is what we do... we download this SmartSharder programing program..... play with our own made... or modify the ones we have available.... then load up a game test it... (maybe a few to make sure it shows that way it's saposed to across all of them... such as both 3Dmark's shader tests as a good start as they have a few different variation of shaders..... then simply name it.... and post it up? no screenshots needed?
