MSN Messenger upgrade blocks Trillian

Microsoft is forcing people to upgrade to newer versions of its instant messenger application and is shutting its doors to third-party IM products such as Trillian.
As of Oct. 15, users of Microsoft's free Web-based MSN Messenger and its Windows XP-based Windows Messenger will need to upgrade their software to a newer version or be shut out of the service, the software giant said Wednesday. MSN Messenger users will need to upgrade to version 5.0 of higher; Windows Messengers customers will need to upgrade to version 4.7.2009 or higher; and consumers with MSN Messenger for Mac OS X will have to use version 3.5 or higher. The last MSN Messenger to be released was version 6.
According to Microsoft spokesman Sean Sundwall, "Security issues that could be posed (on older versions) require us to force an upgrade." He declined to detail the security issue, saying disclosure would "put customers at undue risk."

As I said in the thread before (which got mysteriously deleted )
I don't see why Microsoft has to let people connect to THEIR server with someone elses software.
Trillian should setup their own servers, then it would be fair competition, but connecting to Microsoft's server, I don't see how microsoft needs to let them.

Maybe so, but is this fair to Linux users around the world? Last I checked, Microsoft doesn't release Linux versions of their software.

Like I say, if someone wants to compete with Microsoft, they should get their own servers. If trillian starts their own server, they can create it for whatever OS they want.
Microsoft's anti-trust case was for stopping competition, this is forcing companies to develop their own stuff, and not use microsofts resources for their own gain.

how would that work..... an MSN user using the msn messange connects to the MS server... then a trillain user connects to a trillain server.... they have to relay back and forth everything making for more useless internet trafic and more server bandwidth uses...
Wereas a user that used Yahoo/MSN/AOL/ICQ/IRC has a registration with all of em..... MSN Messanger is free software.... MS is providing a free server.... it's not like MS is losing to another company... because in the long run.... MS is still taking on the same amount of people... as are all the other user of Yahoo and whatnot..... BTW, could you imagine the amount servers that trillian would need to keep up with all the different progies.. being msn/yahoo....damn.. that'd be a mess...

No, I'm saying Trillian should have their own complete network, not connected with MSN at all.
That would be real competition.
(PS: Yahoo messenger is free...)

i know...all of the services are free.... but really, we don't need more services...that would defeat the point of what trillian does....
Trillian migrates all the instant messengers into one neat and tidy program to make it easier and cleaner for those that use more then one service..... not only that, but even for those on just the one service can do so much more... it's able to customize it to your likeing.. .be able to do anything you want without a program holding you back.... MSN Messenger doesn't allow much... neither does Yahoo or whatever else your using.... I don't think Trillian is in direct competition with anyone....they just want to sell a full package deal for user interested in keeping things organized.....

I know they are not in direct competition, I was just saying that Microsoft has every right to stop other software from accessing their own servers.

MS is making money off of trillain though.... i'm pretty sure there some kind of liecence deal that had to be made for them to incorporate the exact features... the only thing.. they would be able to keep it cheap by removing some of the not so much used ones..... such as online games... or exact smilies.. or whatever else....

FYI Trillian Pro 2.0 Beta takes care of the issue. They'll have a fix out for all versions when the MSN change goes into effect.

i WAS modeling a flash version and keeping it under 35kb.... but.. noticed..that it wouldn't work.... or just don't know what i'm doing..also heard that only admins can incorporate it.... Guess that was a loss cause..

Yeah, it's because it adds MSNv8 protocol support. But it will probably stop working after Oct 15.
