PC Gaming: Maximize Performance and Image Quality

In our recent story comparing the top 3D graphics cards from nVidia and ATI, we turned performance testing on its head, focusing on achieving the best looking image at an acceptable frame rate, rather than pumping as many pixels as possible. But you can use the same methodology we detailed there to gauge the performance of just about any Direct3D or OpenGL game.

Bear in mind that this whole process is a pretty inexact science, with lots of wiggle room for interpretation. Most importantly, there isn't always one right combination of screen resolution, AA, AF and in-game rendering features that will deliver absolutely the best image.

As you try to maximize your game performance, take our advice and keep things fairly simple. This kind of performance tuning exercise can take on a life of its own. That's fine if you're a real tweaker, but don't lose sight of why you're doing this performance tuning in the first place: to maximize the fun factor of playing games.

The first thing you're going to need is a tool called FRAPS, made by Rod Maher, who lives down under in Australia. FRAPS is essentially a frame rate speedometer. The app counts page-flips, which occur every time a new frame of animation is displayed on-screen. Each of the page-flips comprises one frame per second. FRAPS had been freeware/donateware for a long time, but starting with version 2.0, it's now a commercial app that costs $30 bucks to register.
