Apple Gets Its Wish: Music Download Royalty Rates Remain Unchanged

I wrote earlier that the the Copyright Royalty Board (CRB) was expected to rule Thursday on possibly raising the royalty rate for downloaded tracks of music from 9 cents to 15 cents (66%). Quite naturally Apple was against this, and stated (or rather, blustered) it might go so far as close the iTunes Store should the rate increase. Well, Apple got its wish: the Copyright Royalty Board (CRB) ruled rates would be unchanged.

Thank god.

It would suck to have to pay over 99 cents a song. Because it would of course make the end user pay the difference.

And it would effect all the download services so I hope this does not come up again!!!

Lucky for me I don't pay $1 a song on Itunes or any of those because you get such a low quality for being so expensive...

By 'eck, so the royalty is 9 cents, and there is no stock, no manufacturing (ok, server maintainence and so on), but surely, there must be a way to pile 'em high and sell 'em cheap at prices not much higher than allofmp3.

The other thing, is that 9 cents a track royalty the same for current hits and old material, maybe the rate should have gone up for top 40, and down for the rest?

24 cents a ringtone, the only thing more painful is the failure to clamp down on the ringtone subscription sharks. The business practices in the ringtone industry stink to hell.
