Toshiba and Samsung said to be planning netbook market entry

Japan-based vendor Toshiba and Korea-based vendor Samsung Electronics are both planning to enter netbook market in the fourth quarter this year, according to sources in the notebook industry.

Toshiba is planning to launch an 8.9-inch netbook (Satellite NB105) in the fourth quarter this year, with the model adopting an Intel Atom processor, 1GB memory, 120GB hard drive and Windows XP.

Samsung will launch a 10.2-inch netbook also using the Intel Atom processor, 1GB memory, either 80GB or 120GB hard drive and Windows XP in Europe in October this year.

Since the Intel Atom shortage has been resolved, the only top-10 notebook vendor that have not made plans to enter the netbook market are Apple and Sony, while many second-tier notebook vendors are also entering the market expecting to achieve brand image boost.
