Using the fastest and most-powerful graphics processor NVIDIA has ever developed, both new GeForce products are constructed from a freshly-minted GT200 graphics processor. Both the GTX 280 and GTX 260 products position themselves at the very highest segment of the GeForce product line. NVIDIA Estimates that the GeForce GTX 280 will be introduced at $649, while the similarly powerful GeForce GTX 260 will enter the $399 price point. If the competition ever had a very good reason to be concerned with their future, it would be right now.

nVidia GeForce GTX 280

With the release of nVidia’s latest GTX 200 platform today, we see a possibility of tremendous change one more time- although its more on the lines of evolutionary than revolutionary. The GPU continues its war against the CPU with nVidia delivering the CUDA platform that allows your graphics card to offload a lot more stuff from the CPU in a much easier fashion. And its bitchin fast for gaming as well. Lets say hello to the two lovely ladies- the nVidia GeForce GTX 260 and the GTX 280.

It's once again one of those special times of the year that all computer gaming and technical enthusiasts live for, new graphics solutions. Preceding every one of these tumultuous occasions there's always a certain amount of truth about the product(s) in question coupled with vast amounts of rumor, supposition and hype. We at Bjorn3D have been around for over ten years and have seen a number of these events come and go; some being obviously more memorable than others. Today marks the launch of what could be one of the most memorable of these occasions, Nvidias radically new 200 series of graphics solutions.

Brute Force: Nvidia's GeForce GTX 280 and 260

1.4 billion transistors. Just let that number sink in for a little while. One point four billion transistors. That's how big the GTX 200 GPU at the heart of Nvidia 's new high-end graphics cards is. To put that in perspective, Intel's latest 45nm quad-core CPUs with 12MB of cache is about 820 million transistors—70% less.

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 280 Graphics Cards by EVGA and PNY

When the NVIDIA GeForce 9 series of graphics cards launched back February 2008 with the GeForce 9600 GT leading the way, many enthusaists didn't see the performance jump they were used to seeing and saw the series as a polished GeForce 8 GPU with a new name. The GeForce 9800 GX2 was launched in March 2008 and was the fastest card on the market, but wasn't really innovative as it was again just a couple GeForce 8 series cores on a new board. By the time April 2008 came around the GeForce 9800 GTX it was yet another G92 based product and many enthusiasts were not impressed. Those that bought the GeForce 8800 GTX back in November 2006 had a card that was still faster in many applications and had no real reason to upgrade unless they wanted the new video processor or better power consumption numbers. Anyone that bought a GeForce 8800 GTX back in 2006 and paid an arm and a leg for it should pat themselves on the back as they bought a video card that lasted well into 2008. With that said, it is time for GeForce 8800 GTX owners to think about upgrading because after you read this you will be wanting to.
