Creative Labs Slams Door on "Fixed," User-Modded Vista Drivers
I'm still a gamer, but with the amount of heat gaming PCs put out, I've switched to gaming laptops only. It's way more expensive, but at least I haven't had to experience the problems Creative Labs users have been having on Windows Vista. Drivers were buggy and feature-crippled.
User Daniel_k (Daniel Kawakami) has been modding Windows Vista drivers for Creative Labs products. While Creative Labs insisted that features such as Decoding of Dolby Digital and DTS signals and DVD-Audio which worked fine in WinXP, would not work on Vista. Daniel_K was recently able to "fix" many drivers, enabling the "incompatible" features as well as fixing many bugs.

You might not have to mod drivers for Creative cards anymore Robert. Sounds as though not many more will be bought going by comments in the links in that article.

creative are f**king monkeys all together. They are purposefully crippling their older products just so you can buy their newer stuff. I can understand the new audio stack, but they have been insanely lazy to improve the situation. Indeed they have crippled the soundcards, but with such mods as YouPax I get the same performance and options as I did in XP (except a few minor pops and sound going off). Honestly, why not investigage what the modder did with the driver and speed up your god damn process of getting a working suite. The funny thing will be the next sound card they will release will say all this horse shit about being built for vista and having a software suite for it, and it will be cracked by someone for use on X-Fi. I only bought creative cards because I actually do find them very clear for music and gaming, if I was a pro editor I definitely would not use them. They did a very similar thing years ago, they got rid of options on their SB Live drivers when they changed the mixer. CMSS was helpful for me years ago, then new drivers came out for SB Live and it was gone. Then what happened? SB Audigy came out and it has CMSS back, and someone figured out how to get CMSS back on SB Live. Honestly, I have used YouPax and other modded drivers for my card for me and tons of my friends, no one has damaged ANY of their hardware or crippled their system. If anything it unlocked more possibilties of the card. I am one of those people that didn't mind to spend time to mod my drivers. It is all a marketing scam, and I don't agree with people on that often but I do with these dickshits. They don't have bad hardware, its the software the cripples the hell out of them.
They have ruined the PC audio market all together.
edit - us being "Driver"heaven, we should actually get someone from Creative to talk to us! We are bigger than we were in 2003, when I came in for the Audigy 1 to Audigy 2 mod.

It would be nice to have other brands for gaming and at least the same audio quality as the creative labs' cards, but there aren't. But when people accept either the horrible support from CL or mediocre products from onboard sound solutions (and claim they sound as good...), then what do you expect?

I saw this story and I have read what Creative posted in their forums. It's fine that they take this stance towards a modder. I would not expect anything less especially since Creative thinks you should have to pay for drivers.
Great thread title by the way. I slammed the door on buying any more Creative products in the future (last year) and I won't recommend them to anyone that is building/buying new computers either.

If you are trying solicit money from someone else's work, sure that isn't fair. But if he wasn't doing so I think they should learn from him.

There are other sound card makers of comparable or even better quaility, though not for gaming nor feature sets.
I think they should license out EAX 5.0 to other sound card manufacturers, they could sit back and reap in profits and not have to provide support for so many products such that they are so swamped that they cannot deal with the situation. It would prevent situations like this.

Actually he was, he was accepting donations for modding it. He even said that, going He will just release them for the people who donated. Then later said he was gonna release based on how much donations he gets. Then creative told him to stop modding them.
Then thats when it started. He did give back the money that was donated to him, but he shouldnt had even ask for donations in the first place.
Its creative IP they have every right to tell some one to stop doing something. They owns the rights to the product and the ip. He was perfecty safe when he was doing it without accepting donations. He had no reason to even take donations. Since he wasnt hosting the drivers on a paying website.
So I dont agree with daniel, plus he doesnt even program them. He just copy and paste files here and their and changes a few lines here and there.
So it also been no point to even hire him,If they did. I'd be running towards them asking them to give me one too.
Since I can do the same thing copy and pasting and putting lines here and there like I did for Razer AC1 when vista drivers didnt exist.

many times that what you really can do with drivers with the same OS codebase! If omega was taking money for his mods, that isn't fair to ATI. but offering something better is fine. Actually, he does take donations as well! ATI is fine with it! I think creative SHOULD learn to customer outcry

Dun be too cocky. At least his drivers work with 1 or 2 fine tune. Your X-Fi vista drivers is still dead after 5 or 6 revision.

If someone is asking for donations.. that's fine.. it's a donation...
But demanding donations for something that technically isn't yours to begin with is wrong still.
However it's kinda not clear on the specific circumstances.... so i really won't say one way or another what my opinion of the situation is ...
all i know is creative can burn in hell anyways.

Yeah for all you know Creative might have sold their HQ at record price. Then they create some hoo-ha to drive their shares down. Whack their own stock and earn 2 HQ when they announce some good "news"
We may turn out to be idiots cursing and swearing while they sit back and play their game. Millions have complain but hey there they have to be users right? How can you swear not to buy and yet there are still so many owners. Guess those who destroy their cards are bigger nersa as they bought with their own money.
I am sure YouP Pax or others will come out with a better mod later so for now let just sit back and enjoy the show.

Creative might be asses about this, but they are right.
It is their hardware and software, it is their right what they do with them. If you don't like it, don't buy from them again.
