Microsoft cuts Vista prices to urge upgrades
SEATTLE (Reuters) - Microsoft Corp said on Thursday it plans to cut prices of its Windows Vista operating system sold at retail outlets in a move aimed at pushing customers to switch to the newest version of Windows.
The world's largest software maker said it plans to lower retail prices for Vista in 70 countries later this year in tandem with the shipment of the first major update to Vista, known as Service Pack 1 (SP1). Packaged versions of Windows Vista sold at stores and on the Web account for less than 10 percent of all licenses of the dominant Windows operating system that sits on more than 90 percent of the world's personal computers. _____________ Source: Reuters |

I would like to see them reduce the price for EU countries.
Vista Home Premium 280-330 euros=$425-$501. If it is the greek version it is about 50 euros more. Then people wonder why there is so much piracy or why Vista doesn't sell even more.

To be honest, I think the main reasons Vista doesn't sell as well as they would like is not really the price, but the massive system upgrades the average person would have to make to their PC's for it to run well.
Also, (and I'm not too informed on Vista, but from what I've read) the backward compatibility ain't that great. Those two reasons alone have kept my brother and I from upgrading. At this point, our PC's still do everything we need them to, so upgrading just seems like a waste of time and money to us. Cutting the price couldn't hurt though.

Well I don't see why the vast majority of people wouldn't just buy new systems anyhow instead of upgrading. Computers are at an all time low and very affordable now compared to how it was a few years ago it would cost and arm and a leg and you actually had to have a bank account to get a beastly machine but now mostly everyone can afford a nice computer without putting a hefty dent in your wallet. Also Vista is just a stepping stone of whats to come and I am excited to see Microsoft's offerings on there next generation of platforms.

If they want to fade XP away faster, then Vista upgrade needs to be a lot cheaper, especially basic which does not even have the things most people will recognise as Vista.
From news and demos, Vista is exemplified by transparency and the 3D stacking view - those are premium features. Also, there are way too many editions.

Or they just need to stop selling XP, which they will be doing in a few months. It doesn't matter if people on old machines upgrade or not, since computers have a relatively short lifespan until they get replaced anyway.
