In Wake of Teen Suicide, City Outlaws Internet Harassment

You most likely have heard the case of Megan Meier, the 13-year old troubled teen who committed suicide last year after a MySpace romance gone bad. In fact, the romance was a complete hoax, and the boy, Josh Evans, did not even exist. Worse, the hoax was perpetrated by a mother and father, Lori and Curt Drew, and her daughter, who lived down the street (don't get me started on what I think about an adult who would participate in such activity).

While Megan committed suicide on Oct. 16, 2006, and passed away the next day, the Meiers did not discover that the romance was a hoax until six weeks later. Officials could find no existing law that was broken, so officials in the city of Dardenne Prairie. Missouri have acted to close that hole, unanimously passing a measure that made Internet harassment a misdemeanor, punishable by up to a $500 fine and 90 days in jail.

I'm glad that regular harassment remains legal.
