Over the past year or so, I've seen abundant signs that HP's interest in creating handhelds and smartphones is waning. And I have to admit, I'm having a hard time caring.
There was a time when HP was far and away the most significant Pocket PC maker. iPAQs were some of the best selling handhelds on the market, and they did more than anything else to push Palm, Inc. off its throne as the king of the PDA.
But HP really didn't do anything to deserve this success. It didn't even develop the iPAQ. Instead, it acquired this name and reputation when it bought out Compaq. Before this, HP's own Jornada Pocket PCs had been lackluster at best.
Once it had the iPAQ brand, HP did pretty much everything it could to mess it up. The excellent design team from Compaq that had created the first really successful Pocket PCs was let go, and the iPAQ line was allowed to coast on its previous success for a while.
