Simplo claims shipments normal despite MacBook Pro battery recall

Taiwan-based battery-pack specialist Simplo Technology yesterday maintained that it had received no requests from clients concerning any battery recall, despite news that Apple Computer is recalling some of the batteries for its MacBook Pro. Simplo supplies batteries for Apple's MacBook Pro notebooks.

Apple is offering a free-of-charge exchange program for rechargeable batteries that were sold for use with 15-inch MacBook Pro computer systems between February 2006 and May 2006. Apple claims on its website that the batteries do not meet its "high standards for battery performance," but it stresses that they "do not pose a safety risk" and users can continue using them until replacements arrive.

Simplo spokesman Ting Huei-min declined to comment on the news, citing client confidentiality. But the spokesman maintained that Simplo had not heard from any clients about a recall of defective notebook-use batteries, and the company's shipments remained normal.

Ting claimed that even if there had been problems with Simplo's battery modules, the problems would have resulted from the battery cores, not from the modules themselves. The supplier of the battery cores would be responsible for dealing with the consequences, and would have little to do with the battery module maker, Ting said, adding Simplo's operations would not be affected.

According to Apple, the affected batteries have model number A1175 and a 12-digit serial number that ends with U7SA, U7SB or U7SC. To view the model and serial numbers located on the bottom of the battery, users must remove the batteries from the computers. The battery serial number is located above the barcode. Apple maintains that no other MacBook Pro or MacBook batteries are included in this exchange program.
