S.Africa Web site offers gruesome glimpse of crime

Source: Reuters
___________
JOHANNESBURG (Reuters) - South Africans outraged at high levels of violent crime launched a new Web site on Thursday dedicated to giving visitors "a preview of death and violence" in the country ahead of the 2010 Football World Cup.

The site, Crime Expo SA (www.crimexposouthafrica.co.za), will eventually feature graphic photos of murder victims provided by their families as well as a breakdown of bloody attacks by region, organizers said.

pigdog will become famous soon enough

Sad

A friend of mine is an ex South African police officer. I met him after he and his wife immigrated to Australia.

From what he's told me, the web site refered to doesn't even begin to give those of us who have never been there, a taste of the constant fear and tension of everyday life in many parts of SA.

As for my friend, I suspect he suffers from a fairly severe case of post traumatic stress disorder due to his experience as a SA Police Officer.

At times he reminds me of some of the soldiers I served with in Iraq. The ones we could not send back for a second tour. Very sad.

For some, the trauma experienced will effect them for the rest of their lives.

Nations suffer PTSD too. Even if the murders (over 20,000 per year), rapes and other terrible crimes were, by some miracle to cease tomorrow, I fear it would take a very long time for SA to recover.
