Xbox still losing money, but sales improving

Reports circulating around the news services, indicate that Microsoft's losses on Xbox were almost double in the final quarter of 2002. These losses contributed to an overall operating loss of $348 million for Microsoft's home and entertainment division. (Microsoft's home and entertainment division is made up of PC games division and TV products division.) Microsoft is estimated to take about a $100 loss on every Xbox sold, this is not uncommon in the video game hardware arena. Most video game hardware makers are willing to suffer a loss on the hardware in hopes of making up that loss on the software. Xbox did sell well this Christmas season increasing the amount of potential software sales. Xbox did contribute to some light at the end of the tunnel with encouraging sales of the Xbox Live starter kit which was released before Christmas. The release of Xbox Live did spur sales of Xbox Live compatible software titles.

Not meaning to sound sarcastic, but I hope the X-Box does fail. Maybe then more of those FUN games will come out on PC sooner and more frequently. There's just too many games that come out on console systems that never see the light-of-day on a PC.

Yeah, I know, it's easier to make a game when it only has to work on one configuration, but come on, I want some FUN games to play too. I didn't pay hundreds and hundreds of $$$ for my PC components just to stare at desktop. I'm not a fan of strategy games and I've grown bored with FPS's (although I may give Unreal 2 a whirl), nor do I want to have to be a pilot just to play an airplane game. I want some FUN games more often to play on my PC.

The arrival of the X-box really ticked me off because I figured "Well, there will be even less FUN games for my PC now" and I was right.

This is just one of those things that's eating me up about PC gaming, that's all. Don't read too much into it.
