Ram upgrade issues
I've just upgraded my ram from 1gb to 2gb i'm using 4x512mb of OCZ Platinum ram its the 400mhz 2-2-2-5 stuff. For some reason when i switch my computer on it clocked my ram down to 333mhz which I thought was odd for saying its 400mhz ram and my processors fsb is 400mhz too. The problem is I'm getting the odd BSOD and i was only using visual studio 2005 and playing some music in musikcube.
Is it possible the cause it the fact I clocked it up to 400mhz even though its more than capable of it, and is there a problem with using all the ram slots at once, as i've never used all the ram slots on a motherboard before.
My motherboard is a sapphire pure innovation and i'm running Windows XP x64 if anyone knows any settings that might make it more stable or general advise it would be much appriecated as I have to say i'm not well up on this sort of stuff I like to plug it in and it just work.

Did you set memory to 1T? If so try 2T then

95% of the socket 939 motherboards out there cannot drive 4 modules at 200MHz with such aggressive timings as you have set. Try at least setting the command rate to 2T as suggested, or loosen the timings a little bit.

The motherboard automatically sets the timings and the ram is set to 2T automatically. I'll have more of a play when I get home from work, it was on all last night without a BSOD. I noticed there are 2 settings for the ram speed both were set to 166 by the motherboard but I only altered one of them which might have caused the problem but i dunno i'll see later.

Nope still BSODing does anyone know what setting to set for the memory. If I have it set to auto then it works perfectly but its not very fast due to the memory running at a different clock to the cpu.
I need to know some settings to make it stable while not reducing the speed. I have to admit this whole ram thing is very confusing, and I just need someone to tell me what all these settings do as theres load and some stable settings for it.

You're gonna have to get 2x 1GB modules, the Athlon 64's have the controller on the CPU and most controllers have a hard time addressing 4 modules at those kinds of speeds anyway. Even my mobo which has the controller on the northbridge automatically knocks the RAM down to 266 MHz when all slots are filled.

your kidding me!!! WTF? so why do motherboard manufacturers give you 4 slots? thats silly. Can I not run them at 400Mhz with slower timings? and if so how as I don't understand it. Sorry about that rant there i'm getting a little stressed as i've just spend £100 on new ram and it doesn't do as it should

That's just life...not the fault of the RAM. There isn't really anything to be done about it

I'm sure if they pulled their fingers out of their arses they could do something to make that work correctly, they may not be able to do it with my board but they should at least sort for new ones its stupid having that many slots and not being able to use them at full speed its just idle-ness on their behalf.
Well looks like i'm sending this ram back and sell my current 2x512 stick and buying the overpriced 2x1gb sticks FFS

Yeah well I'm sure if ATI pulled their fingers out of their arses I'd have a working-as-advertized All In Wonder video card, but there is abysmal software support for 'em so I'm stuck with half of what I payed for.
Believe me, I feel your pain.
