Ethernet Problems

I have recently just taken order of my new pc which some of you may remember from this thread http://www.driverheaven.net/showthread.php?t=91684 and after 1 hour after setting it up I have already ran into a serious problem.

My PC Specs
ASROCK K8NF4-SATA2 nVidia nForce 4 Motherboard
AMD Athlon 64 3400+
1GB PC3200 400mhz DDR RAM
ATI Radeon X800GT PCI-E X16
120GB HDD
Realtek AC97 7.1 Audio
Belkin ADSL High-Speed Mode Wireless G Router (F5D7231uk4)

I have a Belkin ASDL Modem Router which broadcasts my internet connection wirelessly to the 2 other computers in the house (I am writing this thread from 1 of them due to this)

Before I unplugged my old computer the router and the internet were working fine. Then I unplugged my old computer and plugged in my new pc and everything seemed fine (btw X800GT PCI-E is a beast!) but I couldn't get an internet connection.

The new PC is connected to the router by a network cable from the router to an on-board ethernet connection on the back of my computer and when i plug it in nothing happens. The connection on my pc says "A Network Cable is unplugged" which it obviously isn't and on the router when you connect to the router by a network cable a green light should come on but there is no green light.

I am really baffled by this as I have tried everything I can think of. I'm even worried that there is something wrong with my motherboard! I've even put the router back into my old computer and it still works fine so we can rule out the router and the network cable being at fault so it's something to do with the computer

The only things I can think of that could be causing it are
 • The nForce 4 drivers have been somehow installed incorrectly
 • The wrong drivers have been installed
 • The ethernet is disabled somewhere (in the BIOS etc)
 • The nVida Forceware has setup the ethernet connecton wrong
 • The motherboard is faulty! (bloody hope not!)
But I wouldn't know how to check these or fix them!

Any help will be appreciated as also i need to activate my XP in 29 days and i have no net connection to do it in!

Thanks

I think the router is using a hub vs. a switch and therefore you need a different kind of cable.

Are you using a straight through or a cross over cable?

can you explain what you mean? whats hub vs. a switch and what a straight through anf a cross over cable? (sos for being a n00b)

Just to say that the same router and the same cable and the same configuration worked absolutly brilliantly in my old pc but once I swap it to my new pc i can't get a net connection to my new pc (the other 2 computers can still get a net connection wirelessly when this happens btw)

Go into your device manager and uninstall the drivers for your network card. Then reboot the system. The drivers should reinstall.

A lot of those Realtek onboard NIC's show that same error message when they are plugged in the first time. When we uninstall and reinstall the drivers it fixes it about 50% of the time. Unfortunately, there is another 50% that it doesn't help. Hopefully you are in the better 50%.

unfortunatly it didn't work but i still think it's something to do with the drivers, could you direct me to nVida's latest ethernet controller drivers for my on-board ethernet
my mobo is a ASROCK K8NF4-SATA2 nVidia nForce 4 Motherboard.

I think you'd be better off checking the onboard LAN is enabled in the bios. It's usually either esc, f1 or delete to enter the bios then just use the left/right/up/down cursor keys to check whats enabled. You might find it's pgup or pgdn to change an option.

this happened to me also.
in my case my mobo is just plain broken, the ethernet port doesn't work.
So I bought a £10 pci ethernet card. problem solved (so much easier than going through the whole rma thing)

it could still be a driver problem though, or very possibly a conflict in the bios.

if you have a pci slot free though, just buy a network card.

1) Check the actual ethernet port on the new PC. There are 2 things you need to look for. The first is a bent or missing pin/wire within the connector itself. The second one a little more interesting. Sometimes the backplate (the aluminum plate around the connector, see pic below) can be installed incorrectly. On alot of plates there is a grounding tab that will touch the ethernet connector when the motherboard is installed (see red circle). If you install this plate, and not pay attention to that tab it can get shoved inside the ethernet jack when you install the motherboard. This essentially will cover the pins. You can't realize how easily this can happen.

2) Double check the cable connections. Make sure that when you have the computer on, and the cable connected to both the router and the PC that the light indicators on both are lit. If not, then the cable could be bad, or one of the devices.

3) Try another cable. Infact, try that same cable on another computer to make sure that the cable works. It may have worked before, but it may not now.

o.k thanks for your ideas tipstaff but none of these problems exsist - the ethernet port looks brand new to me and perfect also in my above post i said

and i'm still got my old pc connected just to use the net! Btw I've tested the wire and router in my old pc when i discovered this problem in my new pc and they still work fine

to niceguyrichy i do see what you mean but i don't want to buy a PCI ethernet card and to comprimise on a computer that is only a few days old. I might as well fix it while i can and i will be able to send it back if it is a mobo problem as it has a years warrrenty and the computer still has 360 days left on it!

to The_Neon_Cowboy whoops i didn't realise! i'm using one of the themes that black is barely visible and when i cut and paste from another web page or document the text turns black so i make it white so i can read it when i'm typing my post! I'll make sure i don't next time

to Lelisevis i can't see anywhere in my BIOS about the ethernet port unless i'm missing something!

and finally to Yousaif you mention

but i haven't installed anything (drivers, software etc) mentioning about the port being Realtek but it being nVida. The only driver that has installed infact is a nVida nForce Networking Controller so could that be my problem? I need to install a Realtek driver?

Just curiousity but does your motherboard have 2 Lan points? Just checked my Nforce 3 board and it has a Nvidia Lan port and a realtek port, both of mine work but I had to lots of ethernet drivers to install on the supplied CD. Have a look in your device manager for a port with a yellow sign next to it then you know it's just a driver problem. If you don't see a yellow mark then you need to check your manual to find out how to enable it in the bios. Default for one of them is off. It'll be something like Lan, ethernet, or words to the similar. On mine it's in the advanced settings along with raid settings.

Main reason I assumed it was Realtek is because you have the Realtek AC97 sound chip onboard.

Is this your board? http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813157084

If so then Newegg shows the LAN card to be a:
LAN Chipset Realtek 8201CL PHY

That may be the issue there.

hmm yes that does look like my mobo except that is a K8NF4G and mine is a K8NF4 but they seem identical - it has the same onboard graphics (not that i use that) the same amount of usb slots the same audio the same processor socket etc.. well i'll see if i can find anything about that.

btw in my bios i found 2 settings relating to LAN one was something like powering it up at startup which was disabled so i switched that to enable and the other was it to be turned on which was set at auto (only choices were auto and disable) but it still doesn't work

edit : btw could someone point me to the latest nforce 4 drivers on nvidia's website as i don't know which ones to download (don't want to download the wrong ones)
