Asus A7N8X-E Deluxe - updating Nforce2?
Hi, I have this motherboard and wish to update the sound drivers. I am guessing I need the unified pacakge available from Nvidia? I downloaded this but when I go to install it - it wants to create it's own folder on my C drive. But at the moment this means it will be creating a new folder rather than writing over an old one. Will this cause a conflict?
I have tried just getting the drivers themselves but then I lose the nforce system try utility. It simply says some files are missing and wont start up.
I was going to uninstall the current utilty but it isn't listed in add/remove progs. Is this because it's listed under something else because it came as supplied with my motherboard rather than being from Nvidia themselves.
This is the first time I have attempted updating drivers and I have no clue what I'm doing - but I'm having some sound glitches in FFXI and want to try fixing them. cheers.

im sure people will say im wrong here, but i always used to just install the new versions over the top of the old ones and it worked fine for me, give it a go and im sure itll be fine. the utility changed a while ago from the nvida contol panel thing to something called nvmixer, this is why it wants to create a new folder i guess, just let it, itll be fine

Ok, now I'm all confused. I have a system tray utility called "nforce tray options" this is basically a sound mixer for my sound card and lets me setup surround sound etc. It has a graphic equaliser and such built into it.
If it's a realtek sound card why does the nforce utility allow me to alter my sound settings? I really don't want to mess anything up!!

just use the nvidia ones... the 5.10 unified drivers in my opinion are the best. Just let them extract to the C:\ or whatever then it installs them. overwriting the old ones.

This is what is halting me in my steps though. It wants to create a folder that doesn't actually exist at the moment. Suggesting the current drivers/utility reside in some other folder of which I don't know the name. Therefore I might end up with 2 versions of the utility and then endless conflicts.
It wants to extract and then create a folder called C:/Nvidia/windows2kxp/ which at the moment i don't have on my P.C so don't see how it would just write over the old drivers when there currently isn't a folder called that to be overwritten. Does that make sense?
If I use the drivers from the windows update I lose all functionality of the soundstorm utility for whatever reason - so that's a no hoper

it should be good enough just to let it create the new folder. if you're worried you can go into control panel>add/remove programs>uninstall nvidia drivers
just make sure you already have the new drivers d/led as it'll probably uninstall your LAN

that folder is just where itll store the setup files for the drivers once you start the initial file you downloaded. it is _not_ where the drivers go (they all go into various system folders). when you are first running the file you downloaded, you are effectively just extracting it (like unzipping it) to that folder C:/Nvidia/windows2kxp/ then the setup program is run from there automatically. just try it - itll work and youll be happy with the new drivers, i really dont see the problem here

I use a remix driver which you can download here: http://www.andyr2005.com/ . Remix drivers are compilations of the latest leaked specific versions avaiable for each motherboard device (sound, ethernet, agp gart etc). In short, they're the newest stuff, since Nvidia rarely updates nforce 1 and 2 drivers. By the way, both Nvidia's latest and this remix one create a temporary folder and then install the drivers automatically from there or let you do it manually (I don't remember the process).

Yes, to install the new chip set divers it looks like this *c:\programfiles\Nvidia.xxxxx* where xxxxx is the driver version your installing, so this folder is where the installer is upacked to along with the driver prior to installation, and each new driver insatll will make a folder for its version u r installing,
you do not need any realtek drivers for the sound, yer board in the same as mine except yours, the E version supports wireless net, the official 5.10 off the nvidia site should do you juss fine
