Have you looked at those Zalman coolers? I've got a CNPS 7000Cu and its the quietest fan in my computer and my temps are 34C Idle and 39C Load.

would have gone xp-120 in heartbeat only wouldn't suit mobo as l would loose dimm1 slot and l have 4x512 modules installed.its a toss between the freezer64 and hyper6.looking at review these are what most reviews say are better coolers, with xp120 beung top,but can't use it.looked at review.the freezer64 equaled the xp-90 in cooling and the freezer ran 2000rpm slower.only thing about the freezer64 is poor finish.so its either freezer64 or hyper6

The 7700 wieghs more, that's for sure. It's also quieter, and actually cools better by about 5 - 10 degrees less than the 7000.
As for combatibility, even though the 7700 is bigger is should fit your board.. at least according to Zalmans website. I've installed them on a couple P4s (1 was an Intel EE), and all I can say is that they are HUGE! But, they work, which is the whole point, right?

Hi kelticknight
I can say that the XP-120 and Zalman CNPS 7000a-Cu are both great HSF. I have the XP-120 on my 64 and the Zalman on a mobile 2500+.
Since the XP-120 does not fit your board, I just wanted to take the time to say that the Zalman is quite nice and very very quiet, and that's the old model I have. The newer ones are a bit better, cools better and quieter as well.
The only downside to the Zalman is the weight, definately overboard, but for systems that do not go to lan parties, then it's a good choice.
Regards
farkas

I voted XP 120 before noticing that you have the Av8, that motherboard have issues running at 1T with the RAM in slot 3&4..

asmody, the only reason l can't use it is the xp-120 covers dimm 1 slot and at moment l have 4 x 512 ram so all my slots are full.xp-90 is good ,so is freezer 64 amd zalman cnp 7700-cu.with the freezer 64 l can use existing setup to mount freezer,as with xp-90 and hyper6 l have remove mobo and loose av8 setup and install their setup

What are your pricing options... Is there a big diff between the 2 that could add to the equation ?
Do they perform the same pretty much, leaving the choice to weight alone and/or esthetics right now, you have a fun problem
The Zalman comes with a fan controller, I think it's fan mate 2 or something... maybe that's important for you, maybe not.
My opinion, would be to lean towards the Thermalright XP-90, it's light, fits most boards (and should not need to remove board, like my setup), and you have a Athlon 64, so the fact that's it aluminum fits it rightl, cause Intel's can sure use the copper heat absorbtion. Another bonus is the fact that you can orient the fan for blowing or sucking.
The Zalman being all copper will absorb heat better but it's quite heavy.
...I just read a review with the Zalman at 31.8db on low, and XP-90 was at 34db on high fan speed (panaflow), so a cheap 92mm fan on low or medium should be more silent I beleive.
This is confusing, it should be the opposite though cause the Zalman has a 120mm vs XP-90 at 92mm, anyways, different reviews means different measurement methods !
So be sure you read up on the quietness of both of them as I have contradictary info compared to Tipstaff, yet I would think like him, that the Zalman is quieter.
One thing for sure, they are both quiet by any measure.
Keep us posted

the zalman has good cooling and 120mm fan which is quiet, takes more room than xp-90.have to see if the zalman with 120mm setup will interfear with anything ,like g-card.saw some review where it did.have to take a measurement around the cpu to see if it ok
