i've read some good things about the nec burner.

anandtech did a review on it along with some other current burners. it got their gold award. check it out: http://www.anandtech.com/storage/showdoc.aspx?i=2260
hope this helps...

System Specs

The Sony DRU710A is a Liteon 1633S/1653S rebrand (the latest DRU&10A fir upgrades it to 1653S spec / 1633S US model spec of 4x for DL - was 2.4 and 12x for -R - was 8 ).
The firmware is getting better, but still has the typical Liteon tendency to favour decent +R media, but with varible performance, and rather doubtful results above 8x - on the plus side, it supports +R / +R9 bitsetting, now with options saved in firmware, while the NEC 3500 apparently only supports bitsetting in the "Maddog" rebrand firmware.

Overall, the NEC is probably the better burner, if you'd rather not have to second-guess media codes.

Ok so if it’s just a liteon, should I just buy a liteon 1653 or the Sony. Also could you clarify what you mean by second-guess media codes?

Can anyone find what firmware they where using on the NEC and Sony Drives?

Thanks Firstperson

I prefer NEC their good and they frequently keep on updateing thier firmwares

Also there is a big moding commuty tha commonly hacks those firmwares to add things like support/ DVD regan free etc!

NEC is my DVD burner of choice

I have a Pioneer 108 as well and have nothing but good things to say about it. I notice Anandtech gives the crown to the LG model now, but most of the also-rans are very close in the race.

I figure if you can get any of the Pioneer 108, LiteOn, LG, or Sony then you should just pick the cheapest.

The Liteon based drives are typically useless on "unknown" media codes - generic "Bulkcrap" does not agree with them unless you enjoy using the Codeguys firmware tools to apply a "known good" strategy.

More recent firmware has improved things, but the Liteon based drives (any of them) still tend to have sever ups and downs in their media perfomance - with the last firmware, they produce very decent 8x burns (and 8x for all but a short PCAV ramp from 7-8x at the start) on Prodisc R03, but the perfomance on their old favourite (TY) has dipped. The also like the RICOHJPN media (made by Ritek), but are intolerant of the variations in Ritek-coded media from various brands.

I have a Liteon - the NEC came out about a week or 2 after, and drew instant praise.
The Pioneer is probably the best -R burner, forgiving of poor media while still rewarding good media, but Pioneer are too close to the -R standards camp to be objective about +R bitsetting (improves standalone player tolerance by making +R appear to be DVD-ROM, and often essintial to get adequate DL support from players).
