question about backplates

what component does a processor HSF back plate usually come with? a friend of mine just bought a refurb (from newegg) msi neo fis2rand a retail amd64 3000+. when he got the parts, the processor was OEM instead of retail, and neither had a backplate for the HSF. so he went out to a local place and bought a HSF for it, and that didn't come w/ a backplate either. so the question is this: who do we blame?

The backplate should be on the motherboard AND a retail AMD63 bit cpu should come with the backplate etc. as well. Get on to newegg and give 'em a bollocking.

Not sure what you mean by a "Processor HSF backplate"

The only thing I can see that would connect the heatsink to a backplate, is a variable fan control, and they don't all use that.

If the I/O backplate for the motherboard is missing, THAT is a problem with the motherboard - some cases also supply one or more I/O backplates, or have a basic layout one as a snap out.

Just thought, if you are used to some of the Intel P4 heatsink mountings, you'll find the AMD method rather basic

Way off matt. The a64's require a metal backplate to go under the mainboard. It should come with the mainboard and not the CPU. If it was missing, contact the board manufact and I'm sure they'll get you another.
