There is a difference in favor of the FX, but it's not nearly enough to justify the difference. Unless money is no object to you...

Get the regular A64.
dipstick had this to say, after switching from FX to plain A64:
"To be honest in everyday stuff and gaming I do not see a difference at all. [. . .] The FX is not worth the price difference at all!"

The FX is multiplier unlocked, if you plan to mess around with overclocking that way. I don't think it's worth the extra $$ just for that.

On the other hand, it's a poor overclocker anyway, so...

you could lower the multiplier to increase the FSB speed, but I don't think it's worth the money.

one last question.looking at 2 motherboards
abit av8-3rd eye for 939 socket with kt800pro chipset
and second is msi k8n-neo2-plat-54g with nforce3 chipset for 939 socket
hard call, which is better for gaming and better all round m-board

Just to make your chioce easier, I love Abit, but hey, Zardon has probably seen a lot more than I have... But from I know, nForce3 chipset tends to cause more stability problems than VIA.

The Asus A8V would be my pick, but I would have to go with the Abit VIA board out of your choices.

Go with ABit. Even if you have a problm with it, I know their support is ok (they even tried to get the exact memory model when I had a problem). Also, there is a AV8 model, w/o the 3rd eye, in case you don't have to have that...

Most of the major sites like THG, HardOCP, Anandtech, etc. use the A8V. One of my friends has it and I was pretty impressed.

Ah. I know what that's like. That's why I got a PNY 6800GT. It was the only kind they had at the local CompUSA. plus I got a friend on the inside that got it for me on his discount.

Having used pretty much all types of A64 cpus since they were introduced I can honestly say that the new 90nm A64's are by far the best all around(and cheapest). There is absolutely no need to get an FX or anything over a 3500+ unless you have m | |
