I'd get a 512, since a 256 just feels small nowadays.
No reason to get PC2100, you can get PC3200 and run it at PC2100 speeds.
There's no price difference, and you'll be able to use it in the future at higher speeds.
My suggestion: http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProduc...145-026&depa=0

but a 512mb of pc2700 or higher preferable pc3200 or higher.....
sell the ram you have... buy more of the faster ram....
you memory bandwith is killing your over all performance, quite a bit

I have a question about this also....I am thinking of getting another stick or ram, here is what it says about my mobo
"2 x DDR DIMM Sockets, Max. 2GB unbuffered PC2100/PC1600 ECC/non-ECC DDR SDRAM Memory"
I plan on dong a total upgrade in a few months or so, but i want soething to hold me over for a bit. If I bought like pc3200 or even pc2700 would it work in this mobo? I know it would be limited due to the MB, but would it basically function as pc2100?

check out this deal. Yea really : 2 X 256 mushkin bh5 dual pack With the low latency these would work great with a `64 cpu. Later add a stick of 512 to the other channel that'll do 2-2-2-5 aaand can you say bandwidth? Sorry, all this political crap made me feel like selfishly promoting myself.

then you definately need 3200 memory! the athlon 64's run on a 400mhz bus, so your memory will need to match that, so you will need 3200 or above (depending if you want extra overclocking stability)

well in your case i would just get a stick of pc2100 for that rig a pc3200 sould declock for ya but im not for sure. heck you may even be able to find some used in a local pc store. but in my opinion if you are going to build another rig soon leave that thing alone 512 is plenty to run xp on that rig

that just means it will only run at pc2100 speeds, probably a northbridge/bios restriction.
you will be ok running pc3200 but it will run at the slower speed. it should save you buying more ram when you get an amd 64 system
