You want a damn good router that can take advantage of that massive pipe? YET have pretty damn good security.... take a look at XinCOM
They've been making leaps and bounds in the router arena, and every review i've seen has always placed them at the top of the list.... (aside from the usually larger price difference due to it's uniqueness WHICH you might appreciate as well)
http://www.xincom.com/
Currently the 502 is probably the choice to make if you were to get one ASAP..
but with a few e-mails i've sent asking some questions.. they plan on spitting out a 602 shortly with Gigabit ethernet capbilities along with a few others with Wireless abilities... Aside from that, they haven't said much..
Apparently they've let out a little more info about gigabit ethernet as some of the switches they are going to sell have been announced...
more info on the product list here http://www.xincom.com/products.html
this is the one i recommend http://www.xincom.com/twr502.html
but as you can see.. you can increase your security and capabilities with the gateways or get further in as far as your available money will take you...
Now of course, Netgear and all the other well known companies have there own HIGH SECURITY excellent routers as well... but do a search on the XinCOM for some reviews... i haven't come across one bad one yet aside from the first 402's when they first came out... WHICH in the reviews mention that apon calling them up, said they were absalutely amazing to talk to and helped out, not only that, sent a new firmware out to them
Also, if you notice the support for XinCOM products, they get pretty frequent updates.
And as you can see, they've sold me (i'm just saving up and waiting for there next products, looking for a local supplier)
btw... currently, for the price i would pay for a d-link 808HV router (8 ports and 1 wan for a hefty price of 179.99) i could spend a bit more to get the 502 XinCOM twin wan router for 259.99 LOCALLY...

Any one of these will do you well without breaking the bank, plus they are true hardware firewalls. I've been running the FR328s for about a year now and its been great. Also the one's with the high speed cpus (150 vs. 50MHz) really make a difference with multiple connects.

166mhz cpu's in them along with 16mb of memory....
(excluding the 402)

http://www.netgear.com/products/details/RP614.php
I just got this for cheap and it works perfectly- unless someone is trying to hack you 24/7 - I don't see why you would need a business class router-
I've heard people in message boards complaining about the rp614 ver 1 about it losing sync or whatever- don't believe a word of it. This thing has been flawless- it is a ver 2....
It probably the easiest router to set up in the entire world and also has some advanced features. But hey, it's your money...

Yeah, the RP614 is amazing for the price. I only recommended the others because I thought you wanted the extra security and speed.

Yeah definitely- I totally understand and agree.. I'm sure the more expensive ones are better in many ways.
My question is this: "does he need the expensive ones- and if so, why?" Maybe someone IS trying to hack him all the time? It is possible...
Plus wouldn't a person need a higher level of experience and knowledge to set one of those really expensive models up properly? And if so, that type of person would already know exactly what he wanted..
I think maybe Funky thinks that the more he spends the more secure and faster the router will be, but I was thinking maybe he would be very, very happy with a "cheap" router like the one I got.
I would recommend it to anyone that asks, because if they are asking, a better one probably won't be any better for that particular person than the "cheap" one, no matter how much they have to spend...
Hopefully that makes some sense..
Another thing to remember: anything is hackable by the right person, so even the best $10,000 router won't protect you from everyone. And since the RP614v2 is so incredibly easy to set up, maybe there would be less of a chance of someone making a mistake setting it up, and in irony, would be more secure..
The RP614V2 will actually teach a person (without looking at a manual) how to set it up and what each and every setting does. It's really cool. That is more valuable to most people I would think. I just hate to see people spend more money and figure out later that it wasn't really necessary.
Maybe a good suggestion would be to try one like the Netgear RP614V2, and if it doesn't meet your needs, then go ahead and spend the bigger bucks on a more advanced model. I guess you can tell I really like my router..

Thanks for the tips! You were right - I did presume that the more I spend the better I would be protected!
Perhaps I just go with what you have BWX. The reason I what to be protected with a hardware firewall is because of mu huge internet pipe - which is 12mbit.

$84.42USD - Seems a little high, but supply and demand is a powerful thing I guess. You will know what version it is as soon as you get it by the numbers on the back. The coolest part is that you just hook the thing up and it it works with no configuring most of the time.. Then update firmware if needed and then change the password- pretty much all you need to do. You can do much more if you want- well, you will see when you get it...
