Since this forum is MISC. What do you guys think, I want to get this LCD monitor:

I have a 21" Sony CRT right now. BUT a 19" LCD is virtually the same viewable area. What do you guys think?

mmm if you play games or watch dvd's on that pc i would advise against it. the 25.0ms refresh means it will have ghosting when displaying a fast changing picture.

for me CRT is still the way to go, i only use TFT's alongside lcd's. Maybe OLED technology will change that, but for now the benefits of a crt weigh heavier then the disadvantages (size, weight and poweruse)

So for office work i can recommend a TFT but for everthing else i'd choose CRT.

I was always in the same mindset as yourself, but I have to defend the most expensive TFTs right now, one being the 20 inch Dell 2001fp. Quite a few People seem to be totally under the impression that every TFT has ghosting/blurring on fast moving scenes or banding/stepping on colour, but if you are willing to spend the money on the best this doesnt occur. The dell 2001dp I mentioned has a 16 ms refresh with true 24 bit colour.

I have had at least 20 CRTS in my lifetime with my last one being the high end illyama 22inch vision master pro and after seeing a demonstration of the Dell 2001fp in a local store and sitting with it in photoshop and firing a few games up, the difference is simply night and day.

Its quite understandable though many people see the med range or low end TFTs in stores like Dixons and jump to the conclusion that every TFT is inferior to a CRT but it is not the case anymore.

Indeed, for gaming, you have to spend the money to get a LCD display that will perform as well (or better, to the eye) as a good CRT based unit because of the movement on the screen.

The particular LCD display you are considering will likely disappoint you when you are viewing moving material - video or gaming. Nearly any modern LCD really shines though for clarity and image stability on text and non-moving graphics.

ATM though, untill the extremely high end TFT's drop in price and the tech move into the mid/budget range... CRTS are still best choice if you can get one.... and generally less expensive.... I can forsee within the next 2 years... TFT's being a serious all round contender... and moving to them would be without any cons...

I'm very happy with this monitor replacing my kds xf9e crt. Very affordable for those on a budget, 50$ manufacturor's rebate. No ghosting issues with UT2K3-4, EQ/EQ2. I haven't tried it out with Photoshop yet. If you don't mind being limited to a 1280X1024 screen, I definately recommend heading to a local store and giving it a look-over. No regrets here, should tide me over nicely for the next couple years until newer tech becomes cheaper, then it will make a nice replacement for my daughter.

I have just got a new LCD 19" with a 12ms response time and it works great without ghosting only cost me $725 AUD too.

Compared to my buddies 21" **Cough** monitor it is only out by 1inch since a 21" CRT is most likely to be 20" or 19".

at moment looking at dells 20'' ultrasharp with 16ms,a bit slower,its about the best for the money as far as price goes and well under 20ms

Do not go for a 19" tft... the image always looks stretched and the colours tend to wash out... plus 25ms could give ghosting.

If you are going to get a tft then you want to get a 17" or a 20"... with 16ms and dvi

how do you like the benq lcd? is there anything you dont like about it?

im in the market for a lcd now.. i really want the hp f2304 23inch lcd.. too much money

Well my LCD is very nice... what I like about it is the DVI connector option as well as the slimline design. It's very attractive and sleek, the image quality is spot on and with 12ms I dont think you can go wrong for the price.

One thing to note though, the color pallete is 6bit not 8bit - this is noticable if your a photoshop enthuiast. I was told about the 6bit color pallete and compared it to a 19" Sony and couldnt tell the difference until the gentlman in the shop pointed the comparison - which was in my opinion not worth worrying about.

I use the PC for gaming, surfing the net and Worldbuilder and it is great too using widescreen in CS Source (16:10).
