Best socket a motherboard
Hey yall, ive been wondernig what mobo to buy with my new 2600 Barton. id like to overclock it to maybe 2.1-2.2 ghz. Im just torn between what motherboard would be the best to buy. I saw the GIGABYTE GA-7N400 Pro2 mobo and was impressed. Anything that would be better?

i haven't been keeping up with socket A too much lately, but as i recall Abit makes some exceptionally good socket A offerings you should look into, such as this:

I agree w/Vampy. The DFI nForce 2 based boards are awesome along with the Asus A7N8X-E Deluxe which I can personally vouch for.

before i got my intel set up, i had that same board. It wasn't that good at any OCing above 200Mhz. It kept crashing on me randomly even at 1.9 volts.

my friend got his 1700+ to 2.2Ghz with his Abit NF7-S. I also heard that the DFI Lan Party boards are also great for OCing.

Maybe the new WHQL drivers will resolve the one serious drawback of Nforce2 based motherboards - IDE DRIVER TROUBLE.
VIA's Hyperion drivers work!
Sis chipset drivers work!
Nvidia's drivers are trouble - a price worth paying for top of the pack performance?

Every nForce 2 (A7N8X based) board I've seen hasn't had IDE troubles. Then again that was mostly Western Digital hard drives... unless there is another brand that has had issues I haven't seen any.
The drivers previous to 5.10 WHQL, 5.10 themselves, and 5.03 (remix) are all working just fine. My nForce 2 based board hasn't given me any issues on the primary or secondary IDE channels.

all the nForce 2 boards i've used and worked w/have never had any problems with the IDE controllers. The only board that i've worked w/that gives IDE controller problems is the ECS K7S5A. Most of the time upon booting, the board would not recognize the hard drives or the optical drives that were installed.

The gigabyte is pretty good...
... for overclocking - nothing beats the Abit NF7-S Rev 2... we're talking 2.5GHz Bartons on air. The DFI NF2 board is a good overclocker too...
... the main thing to look out for is the NF2 chip... only get a socket a mobo with NF2

The main Nvidia IDE issues tend to be with writers and writing software - falling back to Windows native drivers (with a small loss in HD performance) is the usual answer, putting Nvidia's IDE drivers in the same class as the "Intel Application Accelerator" IDE drivers which have similar issues.
