Burner won't Burn!
I have a LiteOn 52x32x48x burner. I replaced it with my old LiteOn 48x24x48x burner for the same problem i am getting now. My old 48x burner would not burn CDs at all. It would read them fine, but not burn them at all. Any format, music, data, games, etc. Thinking it was the burning laser, i went ahead replaced the drive, and put the 48x burner in my sister's computer. I bought a LiteOn 52x burner to replace the 48x burner. I go to burn a CD and i get the same exact problem. Now i go over to my sister's computer which at this point has my old 48x burner, and burning a CD works fine. I'm like WTF is going on! At this point i'm thinking it's gotta be windows, so i go to re-install windows. Windows installs fine, and i'm going and installing all of my drivers again.
I decide to burn a CD, and the CD burns fine. At this point, i'm really frustrated w/my burner. Now i'm pretty sure it's a program or something i have installed that is causing some sort of conflict in my system that will not allow me to burn a CD. All of my burning software is the same since i've been burning CDs. I have Nero, Alcohol 120%, and CloneCD and so does my sister. As far as other programs go, i have pretty much the same things i've always had, so i don't know what the problem is. Somebody help me with this.

You also may want to download this.
It is the ASPI installment and reg fix. Just do the files in this order.
1. aspinit.exe
2. aspichk.exe
3. FixNT2KXPAdaptecASPI.reg
Reboot.

If you installed the nForce drivers........dont forget to roll back the IDE driver to the Microsoft version......the nforce one has been known to have conflicts with seeing optical drives and also may keep you from burning cd's. Though I did not have this problem with the nForce 3.75 drivers....they seemed to work just fine....and I have the LiteOn 52x burner on an nForce board.

I've got all 3 optical drive on my ide's useing the latest Nvidia SW IDE drivers without any burning issues. Memorex Duel X-1 master Ide1, Lite-on 52246s slave ide1 Lite-on 163 dvd-rom master ide2 . Alcohol 120 v1.4.8 build 1222, Nero v 5.5.10.54 and Roxio 6 Creator Classic v 6.1.0.88 sp2. I haven't needed to install any aspi layers all work great with Xp's default version. Can burn a cd in under 2:20 and a dvd in under 12 min.
The latest firmware is a must. By any chance do you have Nero's Incd installed? Any packet writing software can cause problems such as Nero's Incd or Roxios directcd or drag-to-disk as it's called in version 6. I'd definately recommend uninstalling it if you have it installed. First back up any cd's made with it. After it's uninstalled you probably won't be able to read them. Unless you install a UDF reader... I've got a few I can't read been too lazy to install one and get'em backed up again. Seriously I wouldn't be the least bit suprized if Incd is the cause or your problems packet writer software is junk period.

Pac-Man,
if you've tried everything and still having the problem, try switching master/slave on the two optical drives...

I have an Abit NF7 v2 w/ a LiteOn 52x24x52 and I have to use MS IDE drivers or I have big problems. I also use Nero (5) and also had problems when I tried the packet writing crap. Other than that everything works great.

I just remembered reading a thread on nforcershq back in December. It seemed alot of people having burning issues using the SWide driver were also using round cables. Most but not all reported that replacing them with the reg flat ide ribbon cured their problems.
Was quite a bit of speculation about why it was occuring. The general concensus was that nvidia might have tweaked the timings of the ide driver too tight and poorly shielded round cables was picking up just enough (emf?) emissions to corrupt data.

Well, i d/led the firmware for my drive and flashed my drive for the newer firmware. Flash went fine. Went to burn a CD (game CD) and it burnt fine, no problems! But that was just one CD. I still have to try different types of media to see if it works fine or not. I'll keep everybody posted on how it goes.

the manufacturer may have included a fix on an old issue in to this firmware updates..
and if this is applied to your case then the prob is permanently fixed and is ended.
-Or-
after you flashed the firmware, on your next restart Windows re-initialized the drive
then issueing a new registry and also reload the device driver. this may hold and no more prob
or may not hold if there're others or an additional prob like softwares/drivers conflicts.
you can see this new registry subkey at under the key.. HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\IDE,
all of the old ones are there as well (winXP keeps all records)
note-- the new registry will be issued by windows after the firmware has been updated only,
when uninstall the drive in the Device Manager Windows will reload the device driver on the next reboot
but will not issue a new registry, sometimes this can fix the device drivers related prob.
anyway we'll hear from you soon.

I finally burned a back up cd of all my stuff. Burner works great !
Here's the but.
My gf's brother's pc system also has the same problem i had. His burner also won't work. His CDRW drive is a Sony crx1688 16x10x40x (might be crx168B, couldn't tell cuz monitor is really fuzzy). I'm not sure if it needs a firmware update, or if it could be the drivers for the drive, or the MoBo IDE drivers. Well, he asks me to try and fix his burner, and i go ahead and check for firmware for his drive. I spent probably an hour looking for it, and when i finally found a site that has sony firmware updates, his drive is not on the list for available firmware updates. After looking for so long, i gave up since i didn't find any firmware updates, but after i got off, i started to think if it could also be that the drivers need to be updated. Can anybody help me out w/this problem also?

thank you neon.
the site you gave me is the same one where i found the firmware updates for the sony burner. That's the same site that didn't have the firmware updates, but it did have the drivers, so i'll try out the drivers.

i knew your prob is fixed and it's all working fine now after the firmware updated..
its just a very interesting to me i'd appreciated if you could answer the following questions..
as i can see that you can burn the CD after reinstalling Windows and all the Drivers..
then the burner stopped working.
if you can step back... when was the burner stopped working?? perhaps what's the programs you've installed in order..
then you've updated the drivers and did the ASPI installment's fixings,
my questions are.. Did the burner works at this point?
Have you ever tried the MS IDE drivers at the time?

I don't remember the specific order of what i installed when, and i do not believe that i tried the MS IDE drivers at any point. But my burner works fine now, and i am happy.
As for my gf's burner.....i'm having issues on that one still. Reads CDs fine, but it won't burn. Sometimes the light on the drive will stay on during post, after post, during winXP (home) boot, after boot, and while in windows. When the light is on, it won't even read CDs at all! I am starting to think that this CD-RW is on it's last few strings. I checked, the IDE cables to see if they were properly installed. I also cleaned out the dust in the machine cuz it was hella hella dirty. I checked for the firmware for the drive (Sony crx168B). That i know of, there is no new available firmware for the drive. What I will try is to update the all of the drivers (IDE, CD-RW, bus mastering, etc.) next time i get the chance. Hopefully it's a driver issue that's causing the problem.
