Overclocking/Tweaking OEM boards?

Hi, I have a Sony Vaio PCV-RX670. It comes with

ASUS P4b266-LM mobo
400mhz fsb
256kb L2 cache
P4 1.8ghz
512 PC2100DDR ram
onboard AC97(soundmax audio)
Nvidia TnT2
(not sure about powersupply or cooling)

I have upgraded the Video card to a ATI9700 pro AIW, disabled onboard sound and replaced with a Sound Blaster Audigy LS, but everything else is stock. I was wondering if there was a way of overclocking the processor. It uses award bios (i have ver 1.004 now) which there have been no updates for since like 2002. ASUS does not provide support for the board since it was made specifically for Sony and says i have to go through Sony for the updates and such. Also i have very limited options to change in the bios. I can only change very basic things. Is there a way to have full access to the bios, and can the processor be overclocked? If so whats the best way to go about that.

Thanks

Kevin

Im pretty sure you cant overclock that board. Unless someone has a hacked bios available for download. a system like that isnt really made for o/cing.

Sony Vaio's have a tendacy to not only be on the warm side.. but the PSU's are designed in such a way that... overclocking usually leads to complete instabilities.... i've even come across some that won't even let you install such things as a 9700 pro or 9800 pro as they draw TO MUCH power....

Hey there, I have a VAIO see sig. It is impossible to O'C that system, better off in building a new one if that is your intention or even to upgrade. I installed a r9700pro in my VAIO and it became unstable and the PSU is about to go...so I took it out and things are a little better but still get some lockups due to the PSU.

The PSU on that rig you have is only 268W and is propritary and will not be able to upgrade with a standard ATX PSU because the dimensions are little different. You can transfer to a new case, but I hear from others that have that the recovery discs will not work and other hardware will not work. This is because the motherboard is strictly built to run with Sony VAIO harware and software.

I've done so much research and questioning around to come with one conclusion...build your own rig. So that is why I am, all so that I can finally use and O'C my r9700pro, because that card rox!!!

Hope this helps and wish you the best!!

Hi, thanks for the replies. From the info i gathered I didnt think overclocking was possible either, and it does seem to be pretty hot now. My system seems stable though i dont get weird reboots or blue screens or anything like that. I thought about replacing the powersupply i thought it came w/ 300 but you said its not even that so thats definitely not too good for all the stuff i have hooked up to it. I measued it, but havent checked out the specs of new ones yet maybe i can find one to squeeze in. As for having to use the VAIO hardware and software and all that i bought a new HD and the full version of XP and did a clean install, and i never put the VAIO stuff on it and it seems to run the same as before so who knows. Next time i will build my own PC.

thanks again for the help

Kevin

...well... yes... you can somewhat interchange hardware on the vaio.... but consider that you might finally get to a point that it won't work..... software wise.... intell chipsets usually have no problems at all as all the nessary drivers install right away... pretty native.... nothing much to it..... so it will work... but some of the stuff that the vaio comes with ... won't work completely right or fully do to the lack of software to take advantage of it.. some keyboards have more then buttons then the standard that can do extra things.... but without the nessary software for it... they don't work.... (just an example)
