Motherboard Recommendations?

I want to upgrade my motherboard and would like peoples input on their recommendations for a good motherboard.

I'm planning on bring these items over from my old machine:

ATI ALL-IN-WONDER 9800 PRO
ANTEC Power Supply 430W
Creative Labs Sound Blaster Audigy 2 ZS Audio Card
Sony DRU-500A DVD/±RW/±R/CD ATAPI/EIDE Internal
Sony DVD-ROM Drive ATAPI/EIDE Internal
Maxtor 80.0GB Internal Hard Drive ATA/EIDE interface
Western Digital 120.0GB Internal Hard Drive

Right now, I have an Intel Pentium III processor 933 MHz AOpen AX34 Pro II motherboard. I have been gradually upgrading components, and now ready for the motherboard.

Thanks

Moose

Are you going to keep the same processor?

There aren't very good motherboards out there using the RAMBUS memory. No consideration for a DDR setup?

There really is no good reason to go for Rambus nowadays. The chipsets are outdated (you'll be lucky to find one with AGP8x and FSB 800 support for example) and ddr offers decent bandwidth. DDR is also cheaper.

Your best to go for a motherboard based on the Intel 865PE chipset, the best options are the Abit AI7 and the Asus P4P800. Both are reasonably cheap and offer support for the yet to be released Prescott processors from intel so you have an upgrade path in the future. There are other brands who offer the same features however i've had good experiences with Abit and Asus recently.

My son is using an ABIT board that only can use RAMBUS memory. We'd BOTH advise you to shy away from that option in favor of DDR memory.

ABIT boards are the BEST as far as I'm concerned. Especially if you want to do some nasty tweaking.

My own goal is the ABIT IS7.

And don't be cheap, get the IS7, not the IS7-E (like I did). The latter isn't supported by Intel Application Accelerator. You should also be aware that current boards in the Ix7 series have a misterious problem with temp measurement; anyway, check the threads in the ABIT-USA forums

MSI boards in the NEO2 series also have a good name.

I myself have an ABIT IC7-G and can highly recommend it.
