Updating old pc bios - concerned...

Recently I acquired an old Pentium MMX system (for free I might add). I'll just list the top-end specs for a laugh:

Pentium MMX 200mhz
5I-VX1E motherboard (Intel chipset)
32mb ram (1xdimm module)
Trident 3D Image 9750 4mb PCI
Crystal CX4235 ISA soundcard
2gb Seagate HD

The problem currently is the hard drive, 2gb simply isn't enough (yeah I know the rest of the system is kinda limited atm too, but hey )

However whilst i've got a spare 40gb that I could use, the bios currently on the pc only supports hard drives up to 8gb. I've found a bios update from 1999 which removes this limitation amongst other things, however it's downloaded from a russian site. My concern is are bios(es) region specific? Or are they always in English? I've never attempted a update before, so I wouldn't know to be honest... and the thought of flashing the bios and finding everything is written in some foreign language makes me worried a bit.

http://www.rom.by/bios/LS/ << bios is from here

http://th99.pley.org/m/I-L/36004.htm << the motherboard version

Anyway as mentioned i've downloaded it, and also found the award flash utility (nabbed from the ECS site). ECS has a guide to flashing a pc's bios so I more or less know how to do it correctly, but I need to check this concern I have with people here before I attempt it. Please tell me if i've got something wrong/will be doing something wrong. Thanks.

EDIT: Better point out which one I downloaded too I guess, I nabbed the 5I-VX1E one of course (9GFE-0).

Another site/source ... not aware of any regional issues with BIOS - unless they are Native language, of course

Yeah, the link you have posted is the site I originally found. Reason I downloaded it from another site is:

1/ Couldn't quite suss how their download system works... no idea what I should be clicking

2/ The one I downloaded from the aforementioned Russian site (well, I presume it's Russian ) is archived in .rar format. I was concerned that if I downloaded the .bin file as is, I could risk flashing the bios with a corrupted file (god knows how long it's been stored on their servers). Whereas that risk is less viable with an archived file, as if it had been corrupted I wouldn't be able to extract it.

Anyway, if the general feeling here is the file i've got is ok then i'll go ahead with it...

option #1 you should try the bios from that page
i tested it with my bios patcher and it is in english!

option #2 try this bios

i patched it with the rom.by bios patcher it updated the cpu unicode and removed the hdd limitation it should now soo 40+ gb with this ...

as allways ther are slight risks involved in flashing you bios ....
i present this to you "as is" please dont blame me if anything goes arry i've used this patcher many times... worked wonders on my old machines....

Cheers Neon, i've downloaded both - gonna try the original first and see how that goes, if I have issues (such as the HD size thing still being a problem) then i'll give yours a go. Thanks again.

Well after an initial issue (an error of unknown flash type) I downloaded an older version of the flash utility which corrected this. I guess they remove support for older chipsets over time to keep the utility's size down. Anyway all done, bios updated, and my 40gb seems to work (although not fully tested as yet, but looks promising)

If I have any issues i'll be sure to try your patched version Neon. Thanks for your help.

True, but the original appears to work fine so I have no plans on changing it as yet. Plus i've kept backups of the utility, the original bios saved to disk and updated version to cover my back.
