??? 512k Adsl

Hi. I got 512K ADSL about a month ago, having been on dial up for over 2 years I thought it was a good move to take as I play online games semi-professionally. On dial-up I got around 190-250 ping and now im on 80-90. I would of thought that It would be alot lower than that, I'm with PIPEX one of the best in the UK.

What could be effected my latency/ping in game?

use ASE (ALL Seeying Eye) to look for the best servers, select which country you in, from the modifiërs tab, and you get servers only in that country which means ping around, 12-20 ms for those servers

......internet weather as well.... I have extremely high speed internet..... 10240kb+/10240kb+ ..(ya heard me)...... Uk servers come in at 200ms pings sometimes..... places right in my city... which is tiny...... at best are 50-80ms...... Somewere in canada.. lets say either cost... (i'm pretty well the center of canada).... 100-150ms.... (the east cost is usually the worst due to toronto.. monteal being nailed down... and the routers being constantly nailed.... check out http://www.pcpitstop.com/ for the internet checking utilities..... you can do a pc to site ping tests.... to see were exactly is taking so long to connect or putting your pings i in the yellow red zone...

Use adaware and then spybot and see if they find anything. Spyware can kill your latency.

Also check out http://www.dslreports.com/tweak
This can sometimes fix up your system and help as well.

Thanks ZD. Nah its nothing to do with servers which are near or far or better servers worse servers. I've played on NL, UK, DE, SWE. I've played on all sorts of different quality servers. My friend has the same ISP and gets 50. Maybe its the exchange... I will look thru some tweakin newayz.

....have you done a a fresh install of windows since you migration from your slower conntion to the newer one.... there could be some conflictions.... or limitors in place.... built for your old connection.. i noticed when i took my machine over to a friends.. which has 256kb/32kb cable..... when i came back... i noticed i was running the same.... had to do a complete flush of all the settings..... but some settings just refuse without useing some very damageing 3rd party tools....

Yeah mate I've done numerous. Infact, this is a fresh install right now. I've been playing most of the evening @ 80-90ping no difference at all. Think it might just be down to my location perhaps. Theres lots of factors.

Alot of servers will cap the pings to.... considering that what i'm doing... my Ut2003 server is right now capping everyone.. even me (being on lan).... due to some problems with shaw... and fareness.... i've capped it so that enless your computer can attempt a really great ping... (30ish) .... you'll be bumped to 130ish.... It all depends on the allowed bandwidth..... some people join with a bandwidth rateing of 20,000...... some with 10,000..... some even have 2600...... but i've locked it at 5500.. that way.... the fast ones don't suck up everything... and leave the slower ones with nothing..... balance...

Judah, I partially agree with what ya did limiting it. I dont think you will ever have a problem with bandwidth though! Yeah it levels the playing ground capping like that, but i usually wont go in a server unless my ping is under 100. I have heard that it makes the mini and the pulse gun less powerful (which doesnt bother me too too much as i perfer the shock rifle) and its really hard to combo with such high ping.

P.S. Have you read the Ut2k3 server tweak guide? Just curious it has a ton of cool stuff to improve the performance of your ut2k3 server like making it run as a service instead of program.

linkage?

As for the capping.. well.... by the looks of it.. shaw has started capping my uploads to 128-256kb uploading... my download remains 12000kb/s

I have to talk to them cause this is rediculous....

As soon as i know anything... i'll let you all know....

Hi everyone. I have a similiar question here. I'm using an ADSL 512K/64K. When I play cs my ping varies from 90 to 140. You'd think that it's the nodes and routes my ISP takes to get to the specific server. However, 3 friends of mine got Cable 2M/512K from three different companies. Their ping is 20 to 60.
What I am wondering is this: Is high ping associated with low upload? Because most my friends with ADSL 512K/64K get high pings. And other's with Cable connections usually get low pings. Because ADSL is asymmetrical, the upload is almost always ( a lot ) lower than Cable. Any one have any ideas?

High ping=Higher xxx ms=Low bandwidth=Either or both Download/upload unable to cope (512kb/64kb)
Low Ping=Lower xxx ms=High Bandwidth=either or both download/upload are more able to cope (2mb/512kb)

It also depends on your location.. and the location of the server.. i've seen people with even slower connections get better pings and proformance just due to being extremely close to the server....

I have 12000kb/12000kb connection.... In some places.. i've nailed 40ms pings.. sometimes better... But as soon as i play on a UK server.. i'm well over the 100ms pings.... just due to Montreal Routing being total crap.. (according to PC Pit Stop)

On a server located in canada... usually i can punch in at 40ms.... a server located in my city will give me 20ms...

Will switch to 2048K/128K ADSL probably next month. I'll let you know how on-line game playing will be affected.
Currently on 512K/64K ADSL. 80-120 pings in CS.

I love my ISP it upgraded my ADSL connection about a month ago from 2048/320 to 4096/640, but the costs stay the same, but with both speeds my pings are around 10-15 all the time, so low ping is upload depended, , but with 128K or more you can get pings around 15-20,

well when you download is already rather high... the upload is what will help.. if they match.. you get a really really nice ping..

That was exactly what I was trying to figure out. Is cable's low ping due to high DL or high UL?
Thanks for answering Zulan.

Now I can finally realize that I'm not ping hindered but really do suck.
