i remember seeing a modem that claimed that it could compress just about everything on the net and connect at a "115k equivalent" .... Also, what cyborg is saying may also be the case...

regardless of what the FCC says it is possible to connect faster than 56k over a standard phone line.

My friend Joanna and I used to sit at her house and we could get connected at 115k all the time.

One time I nearly crapped my pants when I started a download of Winamp 2.x almost 2 years ago or so.

It downloaded at 24K.....As you can imagine my jaw dropped

I know it sounds very strange, but there have been times when with my 28.8k modem (i don't use it anymore), that I got some very unusual speeds. At one time, my ftp client showed me download at "1400kbps". It lasted for only a split second, but I did have about 500 more kilobytes downloaded... from that point on, the download went at 25k .... Miracle?

info on 115k connects: http://808hi.com/56k/x2-inf1.asp
You are only getting the port speed of your modem as Cyborg suggested. You need an updated .INF for your modem to show your true speed. As far as speed bursts are concerned, I too have experienced short extreme bursts while downloading on servers that are close to home or in my state while on dialup. I once downloading a copy of Netscape running at about 24kps. Don't know if system moniter was showing the true kps or if it was a fluke, but it seemed to download faster.

Ok i figured it was somthing with the driver i was using but anyway why when yoiur d/linhg somthing does the modem not take all it's capable speed to d/l. Like say 4-12kbps when it's reated at 56k? Does have to with the speed of the server or FTP that you are connected too?

The data has to go through a noisy analog phone line first of all. Second of all, some people that control the phone lines in some way decided that they'd limit the maximum speed a phoneline can handle to 53.3. This explains why nobody connects at 56.6. Also, the added noise in the phoneline causes people to connect at lower speeds. Also, when you are downloading a file, take a look at your internet connection. You will notice that your modem is not only downloading the file, but also sending information and/or commands to the server it is downloading from. Also, connection speed is not everything. It has been proven that people that get low connection speeds can still get higher and lower speeds while connected. A connection speed is just the speed the modem was at when it connected. Also, if you have a winmodem and you are doing lots of cpu intensive things, then expect your modem to get crappy speeds. Noise in a phoneline causes all the fluctuations etc. Also, improperly configured internet settings for modems (ahem... windows 9x) can cause lots of packet loss and lead to far lower speeds than the modem is capable of.

Ok but you wouldnt you have thought that someone would have made a program that like put the priorty of d/l higher to get at a higher speed. Or do somthin about the rate at which it is sending and use it for d/ling?

People have done just that. If you are using windows xp/2k/nt, it is very well configured to work flawlessly with any type of modem/internet-connection. If you are using 9x, do a search at download.com for "mtuspeed" and that proggy will help you out . You can't "make a program" to "fix" the noise in your phoneline though (obviously). The "priority" etc is always the highest it can be unless you are doing two downloads/uploads at once.

You must also be sure to know if it is Kbps or KBps, there is a huge difference.

56K is 56Kbps = 7KBps.

actually most isps have different servers setup for different speeds......once all the 56k lines are taken users are shunted to 36.6 then 28.8 then finally 14.4

if you get connected at a low speed you are stuck at it till you reconnect with most isps

I am willing to bet, Sourcer, that the only time you get fast (20K) downloads is when you download a TXT file or something similarly uncompressed. Most modems can do compression on-the-fly and can, therefore, do faster downloads.

They're not. Kbps is Kilobits per second, KBps is Kilobytes per second. There are 8 kilobits in a kilobyte, just like 8 bits in a byte.

Default Post Ok

So that explains why when u connect at 56k kbps and you only see that your d/l are going 4-8 KBps because the Download is a larger file

Well, no. Kbps and KBps are different units. 56Kbps means 56,000 bits per second of transfer. That, in KB is 7K/sec. That is the difference
