Win XP SP3
I thought...I've never hooked up a SATA drive, that it would be pretty straight forward. I want to replace the current HD (with OS) so I thought I just plug it in, it would be detected and proceed with installing Windows. But the drive isn't detected. I can't find anything in the BIOS about SATA I tired leaving my existing HD and plugging in the new SATA figuring it would see it that way..still no luck in fact the computer won't even boot. I now have my current HD in and the new WD 500GB SATA drive connected but I still can't see it. I think I need to update the BIOS but I'm not sure exactly how. From Belarc Advisor Board: MICRO-STAR INTERNATIONAL CO., LTD MS-7060 Bus Clock: 200 megahertz BIOS: Phoenix Technologies, LTD 6.00 PG 03/07/2005 Standard floppy disk controller Primary IDE Channel [Controller] Secondary IDE Channel [Controller] SiS PCI IDE Controller Bus Adapters A347SCSI SCSI Controller SiS 7001 PCI to USB Open Host Controller (3x) SiS PCI to USB Enhanced Host Controller Thanks for any help you can give. |

Re: Trying to hook up a SATA drive for the first time
welcome to DH MrLookout,
just to make sure, is the drive correctly powered? also, the drive may be running at SATA II speeds, something that isnt compatible with an older SATA I interface..... older 478 systems pretty much all have SATA I.... what is your SATA drive model?

Re: Trying to hook up a SATA drive for the first time
If I understood you correctly, you have your old drive in, as well as the new, and when you boot to the existing installation of Windows the new drive isn't there (not even a "found new hardware" notification)? It is possible that SATA controller is not enabled in BIOS, I have an older board by MSI and I think that that was the default setting. If the drive is not listed during POST or anywhere in BIOS (see boot devices for example), than that's probably it.
When you do enable it, if you try to install XP to the new drive, you'll have a new hurdle: Windows XP SP3 install disc doesn't have SATA drivers and can't recognize SATA drives unless you have a floppy that probably came with the motherboard which you need to supply during install. Do you have that?

Re: Trying to hook up a SATA drive for the first time
WD5000aaks
https://www.westerndigital.com/en/pr...sp?driveid=301 SATA 3. I had no idea there was difference. So I need a different HD for this MOBO? The MOBO came with a power cord. It's plugged in. There is a SATA 1 and SATA 2 plug ins on the MOBO. I have the cord plugged in to SATA 1 but neither made a difference. |

Re: Trying to hook up a SATA drive for the first time
The SATA is NOT enabled as I can't find it in the MOBO. I thought it was strange that the MOBO has SATA 1 & 2 slots but I can't seem to find anything in the BIOS where I can turn it on.
No, I don't have the floppy. Any idea what terminology I should use for search to create one? |

Re: Trying to hook up a SATA drive for the first time
There should be option in the BIOS to enable or disable SATA in the Advanced chipset features menu. As far as I can figure out your chipset only supports SATA-I and the drive you have is SATA-II there should be jumper slot in the hard drive to force it to SATA-I mode.

Re: Trying to hook up a SATA drive for the first time
MrLookout, I've just taken a look at the manual for your board, go to "Integrated Peripherials" section in the BIOS and there go to "SIS OnChip PCI Devices" where you'll find "SiS Serial ATA controller" which you need to enable. I think that after that the drive is going to get recognized by the motherboard and by the existing Windows XP.
![]() The CD that came with your motherboard contains the SATA drivers you need. It may even have a floppy image. I downloaded the SATA RAID drivers for your motherboard from MSI and the package contains the floppy image (actually several for several different southbridges, yours is 964). If you can copy them to a floppy drive and give that to the Windows installation (there is a message at the beginning of installation that says something like "if you need to install additional drivers press *some_key_forgot_which*", and if you press that key, the installation will ask you for the floppy a little later). Also, you can find the necessary drivers at DriverPacks and slipstream them to your Windows CD, although it may not be overly simple. There are Windows CD ISO images on the Internet that have the drivers slipstreamed, but I'm not sure if they are legally available so I'm not going to post any links here.

It would be F6 to put in the additional drivers.

Re: Trying to hook up a SATA drive for the first time
Thanks to all. I'm doing more on my end and I'll let you know how it turns out. My OS HD is going bad fast (bad sectors) and I need to get this fixed quick.

Re: Trying to hook up a SATA drive for the first time
Ok..I think I've figured it out..and it ain't good. I found the MOBO CD with the SATA drivers but when I tried to install them I got an error:
Unhandled Exception Error Number 0x800407606 Description: Object reference not set I Googled Error Number 0x80040706 and looked here http://www.msfn.org/board/installshi...6-t103945.html is this a reasonable work around? Keep in mind...the current HD is going bad..it had bad sectors which I fixed in FDisk HOWEVER Windows is going down..I no longer have IE or Search available and I’m guessing that the Install program was also screwed up in the lost sectors. Once I get the SATA drivers installed I will install Windows on teh new drive so the old one will be kept as a back up. I also found this http://consumerdocs.installshield.co...8322&sliceId=1 Which is much more involved but I think I can handle it. Or do you guys have a better idea? Remember I only need to install one thing. Thanks for all the help Last edited by MrLookout; Sep 26, 2009 at 11:35 AM. Reason: Clarity |

Re: Trying to hook up a SATA drive for the first time
Neither idea works. I can't block the Windows Install program because I can't find it. With the other the Setup.exe never appears in the temp directory. Does anyone have any other ideas?
Can I delete my current OS and then install it again on a drive with bad sectors even if I have fixed them with FDisk? That seems about my last hope. |

Re: Trying to hook up a SATA drive for the first time
Did you enable SATA on the BIOS like I said? If you did and your PC sees it (it shows up during POST and in BIOS), then, if you have a working floppy drive, have a friend go to page MSI Global ? Computer, Laptop, Notebook, Desktop, Mainboard, Graphics and more and download SATA drivers for XP. Extract the archive and go to FloppyImage/964_180 folder. Copy the contents of that folder to a floppy and return to your PC (under FloppyImage, there is also a folder called 964plus180(181), you can copy that to another floppy just in case, but I think that the first one will be fine).
Back at your PC, unhook the old hard drive and boot from Windows XP CD. When you see the message saying "Press F6 if you need to install additional drivers" or something like that, press the corresponding button. The setup will continue detecting your hardware and a little later will ask you for the driver. Put the floppy you made in the drive (if you haven't done it before this step) and continue. Choose the SATA driver, and Windows installation should detect your drive.

Re: Trying to hook up a SATA drive for the first time
Ya..I just figured that out. I thought I could load them from the MOBO Cd but it has to be on a floppy....and now my HD won't reboot so I can't burn t be pro my floppy drive. Now I have to send it to my daughter (who has my old computer and have her burn it when she gets off work. (My laptop doesn't have a floppy drive)
I'm so damn close I can taste it! But this has been a good learning process. I used to be pretty good at this until I got sick in 96 and stopped learning. Last edited by MrLookout; Sep 27, 2009 at 01:10 PM. |

Re: Trying to hook up a SATA drive for the first time
if your system was newer, you could also have loaded it onto a flash drive...... sadly floppy is still the way of many computers in use today

Re: Trying to hook up a SATA drive for the first time
I copied the directory 964\180 on a floppy and got this: "The file txtsetup.oem could not be found". Any other ideas?
Heading for MSI to see if they have something better. |

Re: Trying to hook up a SATA drive for the first time
Are you sure that you got the right 964_180 folder? Inside the driver archive, there's the RAID folder. Inside it, there is a 964_180 folder, but it's not the one. You need to get into the FloppyImage folder and there you'll find the right 964_180 directory which contains the txtsetup.oem file (I just checked to make sure).

Re: Trying to hook up a SATA drive for the first time
Yes, the floppy image folder. I've talked with MSI 3 times now trying to create the floppy. First time they said copy the entire RAID directory as is onto a floppy, that didn't work (it coulnd't find the .oem file). Then they said move the .oem file to the root directory and I still got an error message: "File txtsetup.oem caused an unexpected error (512) at line 1747 in D:\xpsp\base\boot\setup\oemdisk.c. In the root is the txtsetup.oem, an SIS file and the folder with the 4 folders in it.
The board is no longer supported and tech support can't find a floppy to send me. Hell..I'm lucky they're even talking to me as it's no longer supported. Last edited by MrLookout; Sep 29, 2009 at 08:23 PM. |

Re: Trying to hook up a SATA drive for the first time
Looks like the Sis 964 controller (depending on BIOS) is one that will fail to auto negotiate a SATA300 speed drive down to SATA150, so the Opt1 jumpuer should be set on the drive
Problems encountered installing SATA II hard drives on SATA I controllers. Seems that it is 5-6 on pretty much all WD SATA drives. Tried looking up Sis for drivers - the one that covers the 964 seems to be RAID411A, but not sure if there is any way to make a floppy. Double check trouble shooting / drivers for a WD800 SATA Drive - Building and Trouble Shooting - Forums - www.atomicmpc.com.au Make sure you copy everying in the directory to the root of the floppy, and also copy the subdirectory. Not sure if the bundles at driverpacks.net (for building a preconfigured "install anything" XP CD) include this one.

Re: Trying to hook up a SATA drive for the first time
I can only use the 3&4 (PM2) jumpers. Any other combination and the system starts for 2 seconds and then shuts down. That concerns me.
I still can't get the right set up for the floppy from MSI. Going to try again today. Thanks again |

Re: Trying to hook up a SATA drive for the first time
Specifications for the 500 GB Caviar Blue and Caviar SE16 Serial ATA drive (WD5000KS, WD5000AAKS)
Are you sure you are looking at it the right way round, maybe that IS 5-6 and not 3-4 (PM2 is not documented there).
