Boot Up Problem

Haven't posted here for a while

A few weeks ago a few friends came round for a LAN and we shared games and music etc. Now, my external harddrive has all my music on it (itunes) and is the save location for my downloads from firefox. I unplugged the harddrive to share the files, and itunes lost the location of music and i couldn't download anything blah blah plugged it back in, reopened the music and reset download location and everything was fine.

EXCEPT now it takes my computer 10minutes to get past the bios page and boot up - i suspect the computer is looking for the harddrive but i actually have no idea

thanks in advance guys

Re: Boot Up Problem

That's odd you could always check your BIOS and make sure drives that aren't in the system are disabled.

Re: Boot Up Problem

Check to see if there is a "boot from USB" option in bios, in this situation you may want that disabled.

that's definately a possiblity, but i've seen this happen in the most silly of cases where it is doing a mem check (looped) to your board is dieing...,, a question: when you switch on the pc, do you get to see it doing the POST , it would help to know where it starts stalling ????

Re: Boot Up Problem

I have checked that the computer is not trying to boot non-existing drives, and I could not find a "Boot from USB" option.

Its the first screen I see - says something about Asus Lifestyle and has an orange picture on it I will get back with a picture if I can/if you need

Yes. I'll add a picture in about 15minutes (already factoring in boot time etc )

Re: Boot Up Problem

A few quick suggestions: if connected, try disconnecting any Ethernet cable. If it still does this, disconnect all USB and Firewire devices. If, however, you are using a USB keyboard, and can't find a PS2 one, hookup the USB keyboard to one of the top most USB ports closest to the PS2 ports. Lastly, make sure you don't have any memory cards, or CD/DVDs in the system at boot up. In fact, if you have a memory card reader connected to one of the USB ports on the motherboard, disconnect it.

Try each one in sequence, and let us know what happens.

Re: Boot Up Problem

Hmm..the problem seems to have fixed itself. I had been fiddling with dualbooting vista/ubuntu (to no avail) and now the computer is booting fine.

Now I have to figure out why the ubuntu installer isn't showing my partition..

Thanks for the help everyone.

Re: Boot Up Problem

good for you.... but try getting rid of that boot picture, (its in the bios setting), you will know better in-case the problem crops up again,

Re: Boot Up Problem

Glad it "sorted itself out".................... I never liked problems that fix themselves.

Many times when a system hangs at that first screen and doesn't produce any beep codes, the computer is looking for drives......

Hope the problem has left for good

Re: Boot Up Problem

Glad it sorted itself Isaak but it would be nice to know what caused it. On the nag screen I have it disabled on the ASUS board I have here.

Re: Boot Up Problem

Does it increase boot times by removing it or is it just an annoyance to you guys?

Re: Boot Up Problem

Most nag screens don't increase boot time, but do hide some boot text that may be handy to see when troubleshooting. Not sure about your specific board though.

Re: Boot Up Problem

It does hide the boot text, but I've never heard to them affecting boot time!

It doesn't really affect the boot times I don't think just contains text for extra boot options as mentioned.
